MULANJE-(MaraviPost) – Malawi police are keeping in custody a 64-year old man for allegedly murdering his wife after a drinking binge.

Mulanje police station spokesperson Gresham Ngwira identified the deceased as Ireen Zuwedi, 55 while the suspect is Chitekwe Moffat.

Mulanje man commits suicide over family disagreements

MULANJE-(MaraviPost)-Mulanje Police report that 56-year old Poison Maluwa this week committed suicide in the Southern district of Mulanje following family misunderstandings.

Mulanje Police station publicist Gresham Ngwira, said Poison Maluwa married Eliza Naison over 20 years ago.

According to Ngwira, for the past weeks the woman had been chasing away husband, so that she could marry another man.

The move angered the late Naison, who on last Sunday removed iron sheets from the house he built together with the wife.

“Then ?on Wednesday morning?, Poison was found hanging, dead in the same house. After receiving the report Police visited the scene and confirmed the incident. Postmortem performed at Mulanje district hospital revealed that Maluwa died of suffocation.

“The Police again appeal to the public to find alternative ways of solving their problems, as opposed to taking own life. There are many avenues, including Police Victim Support Unit (VSU), where we can seek advice or counsel if we have any problems,” urges Ngwira.

The late Naison hailed from Makupiza village, Traditional Authority (T.A.) Mabuka in Mulanje district.

A girl identiefied as Mercy Chibwana from Namulenga village in Mulanje, has resurrected after she died 20 years ago, police has confirmed.

Mulanje police spokesperson Gresham Ngwira, said the girl, now a woman reappeared in the district ?on Wednesday morning.

Ngwira said the girl died in 1997 while she was in form 2.

“Yesterday the girl reappeared, and started following another woman who asked her where she was going, only to tell her that she would narrate everything to the police,” Ngwira said.

“When she arrived at Namulenga police unit, she failed to say anything, compelling officers to refer her to the nearby health centre.” he added.

According to Ngwira, while there, she started mentioning some names of her relatives, which made the people to call the mentioned relations who identified her through some marks on her body.

Due to her health condition, the doctors at Mulanje district hospital admitted her, and she is receiving treatment. The medical authorities have asked the police to let her rest.

The police said they will continue interrogating the girl when she comes into her sense.

 

Three arrested for possessing medical drugs and equipments

As government and other stakeholders are working tirelessly to provide medical drugs in hospitals across the country, Mulanje Police on Thursday arrested three people for illegally possessing medical equipment.

According to Mulanje Police Public Relations Officer, Gresham Ngwira, the three; Felix Madeya, 32, and his wife Mary Binesi Madeya, 27, and Ernest Kalunga, 38, were arrested after being tipped by the public that they were keeping medical drugs in their house.

“The couple was arrested at Milonde following a tip-off from a well wisher that the two were keeping medical drugs and offering medical services in their house.

“The other suspect, Kalunga, was arrested after he was found selling the drugs in his hawker at Makupiza,” said Ngwira
Ngwira said police carried out a search in the couple’s house where they seized over 27 different kinds of drugs including ARVs, LA, Piriton, Amoxyline and Panado among others.

“Apart from the medical drugs, the two were also found with bandages and syringes,” added Ngwira.
According to Ngwira, Kalunga will soon appear before court to answer charges of selling medicinal products without a license while the couple will answer a charge of unlawfully conducting retail pharmacy business contravening sections 45 (1a) and 45 (2a) of the Pharmacy, Medicines and Poisons Act.

The couple hails from Group Village Head Mabuka while Kalunga hails from Makupiza Village all in the area of Traditional Authority (T/A) Mabuka in Mulanje.

Meanwhile, the police are encouraging the general public to continue reporting to police anyone suspected to be selling medical drugs illegally.

Three Mulanje men jailed 26 years for terrorizing communities

MULANJE-(MaraviPost)-The Mulanje First Grade Magistrate court on Wednesday, convicted and sentenced three men to 26 years respectively for terrorizing communities coupled with robbery.

The three, Victor Chibisa, 26, Watson Mizimu, and William Robben aged 37, on different occasions, have been terrorizing different areas in the district robbing people of their property.

Mulanje Police Station Spokesperson Gresham Ngwira, told The Maravi Post that the three were arrested on Sunday and this was after files had already been opened following complaints from members of the communities in the district.

Ngwira said that after appearing separately before the First Grade Magistrates Smart Maruwasa, and Soka Banda, the three were found guilty as charged.

The police publicist added that in submission, police prosecutor Sergeant Dyson Makupe, described the three as dangerous criminals that needed to be taken out of the society for the common good.

According to Ngwira, Prosecutor Makupe told the court that the other two, Watson and William needed no pity as they committed the offences

after they had just finished another sentence for armed robbery, hence the stiff sentences so as to deter other would-be-offenders.

“Passing their respective judgments, Magistrate Maruwasa sentenced Victor Chibisa to 11 years Imprisonment with hard labor, but sentenced Watson Mizimu and William Robben to 12 years IHL each.

“Further, First Grade Magistrate Banda sentenced the three to 10 years and 14 years IHL respectively. The sentences will ran consecutively,” Ngwira said.

The convicts: Chibisa comes from Mtambalika village, Traditional Authority (T.A) Nkalo in Chiradzulu while Mizimu and Roben come from Phwelemwe and Kalilima villages respectively both of T.A. Nkanda in Mulanje district.

Malawian man in Mulanje nabbed for attempting to sell nephew at MK1million

MULANJE-(MaraviPost)-The Malawi Police in Mulanje district over the weekend arrested a 67-year-old man on suspicion that he tempted to sell his 14-year-old nephew.

Mulanje Police Station Spokesperson, Gresham Ngwira has identified the suspect as Biton Phambala who allegedly approached a certain man at Mwanakhu trading centre in the district offering him the boy at a cost of MK1 million.

The police publicist Ngwira told The Maravi Post that knowing the danger and sensitivity of the deal, the buyer alerted the village headman who advised him to pretend willing to buy the victim as a way to catch the suspect.

Ngwira said the village head further advised the buyer and Phambala to meet on Sunday to transact the deal.

He added that on the fateful day, the suspect asked the nephew, who is an orphan to accompany him to a certain place coaxing the boy that he wanted to collect MK2, 000 which somebody owed him.

“The two ended up into the jungle from where the suspect urged the victim to wait a moment while he had gone to fetch the said MK2, 000.

“Eventually, angry villagers descended on Phambala before being rescued by officials from Plan Malawi who later handed him over to Chambe Police Unit.

“We have charged Biton with child trafficking offense which is contrary to Section 9 of Child Care, Protection and Justice Act. The suspect will be taken to court to answer this charge. The police are therefore condemning this act as it’s a betrayal of its highest order on a relative”, said Ngwira.

The suspect Phambala hails from Harineki Village, Traditional Authority (T.A) Nkando in the district.
