Malawi’s Lilongwe couple arrested for illegal AIP fertilizers possession

LILONGWE-(MaraviPost)-The Malawi Police at Lingadzi Station are keeping in custody the couple; Maxwell Piseni and his wife Jean for being found in possession of property suspected to have been unlawfully obtained contrary to Section 329 of the Penal code.

The couple was arrested on Monday, January 17 2021 at Msiriza township in the capital Lilongwe..

Salomy Zgambo, Lingadzi Police publicist told The Maravi Post that on the material day, information was received from a well wisher that the couple, who operates a general dealer business, has been illegally buying and selling fertilizer meant to support poor families under a government scheme dubbed Affordable Input Programme (AIP).

Zgambo said in pursuit of this tip, police managed to arrest the suspects and recovered 25 bags of NPK and 12 bags of Urea fertilizer adding that the value is not yet advised.

“Upon interview, both admitted buying the fertilizer. The suspects said they have been buying National ID’s from the beneficiaries of the AIP whose names appeared in the government system as being those eligible to purchase the fertilizer but had no money.

“When the deal is done, the couple used to send bicycle operators in different AIP selling points to buy the fertilizer using those illegally bought ID’s but at a price as was set by the government,” Zgambo said.

She added, “Eventually, the couple used to sell the fertilizer to farmers within the area at an exorbitant price. It is said that this has been the trend ever since the programme was commissioned by the authorities.More investigations are currently underway”.

Maxwell Piseni, 50, and Jean Allan Piseni, 43, both come from Chimkonda village, Traditional Authority (T.A) Mpando in Ntcheu.

LILONGWE-(MaraviPost)-The Malawi Police Service at Lingadzi station in the capital Lilongwe are keeping in custody Felix Meke and three others for allegedly stealing property worthy Millions of Kwcha, contrary to section 278 of the penal code.

Lingadzi Police Station publicist Salomy Zgambo told The Maravi Post that the offence occurred between 2020 and September 2021 in areas 10, 11 and 14 where property worthy MK7.6 Million were stolen.

Zgambo disclosed that the suspect Meke and his co-accused persons have been working with Eagle air conditioning and engineering company since 2018.

“In 2020, they were assigned to fix air-conditioners in the said areas. But instead of fixing new equipment, they were repairing old materials and sell the new ones.

“On September 27, 2021, a certain company in Mangochi lodged a complaint to the owner of the company that the four didnot fix the new air conditioner but they repaired the old one. This made the owner of the company to start following up in the places where the suspects were assigned to work. He discovered that all materials were old ones,” she said.

Zgambo added, ” Police followed up the issue and investigations revealed that Meke and his friends have been removing air-conditioner accessories like compressors and coper pipes at area 10 Sana supermarket, European Union and embassy residences. All valued to Seven million and six hundred thousand kwacha (K7,6000,000:00).

“Police have managed to recover some of the property and investigations are still underway to recover the remaining property”.

Malawian man arrested in Lilongwe for defiling, marrying 14-yr- girl

LILONGWE-(MaraviPost)-The Malawi Police at Lingadzi Station is keeping in custody 21 year old Siyanitsani Kambani for marrying and defiling a 14 year old girl.

The incident has happened since March 2021 in Mtandire.

Lingadzi Police station publicist Salomy Zgambo told The Maravi Post that the suspect started dating the girl in March 2021 and involved themselves in sexual relationship.

“In April the girl became pregnant and the suspect decided to marry her in July. In September end, a community based organization, after noticing this, notified the police who swiftly moved in and rescued a girl who is 5 months pregnant,” says Zgambo.

Kambani, 21 years, hails from Mtsiliza village, Traditional Authority (T.A) Njewa in Lilongwe.

Malawi’s Lilongwe man commits suicide after wife left him to marry another dude

LILONGWE-(MaraviPost)-Malawian man has committed suicide after wife left him to marry another man in the capital Lilongwe.

The deceased aged 50 and identified as Petros Chisale committed suicide on September, 16 2021 at Mtsiliza within Lilongwe district.

Lingadzi Police station publicist Salomy Zgambo told the Maravi Post that the late Chisale was married, but for some reasons, his wife left him.

Zgambo says, “A week ago, the woman married another man, a development that angered Chisale.He was heard several times saying he would kill himself for what his wife had done.

“On the fateful day, Chisale was found hanging on a certain tree, 500 metres away from his wife’s new matrimonial home. Postmortem done by medical personnel revealed that death was due to suffocation”.

Chisale hailed from Chimombo Village, Traditional Authority (T.A) Khongoni in Lilongwe district.

Malawian pastor Harrison Nkhoma jailed 14 years for defiling 12-yr-old girl

LILONGWE-(MaraviPost)-The Lilongwe magistrate court on Tuesday, November 3, 2020, convicted and sentenced a 59 year old Harrison Dickson Nkhoma to 14 years imprisonment with hard labour for defiling a 12 year old girl contrary to section 138(1) of the penal code.

The court heard through police prosecutor Sautso Kamoto that the accused person happens to be a pastor of a certain church in Kauma and the victim was worshiping there.

Lingadzi Police station publicist Salomy Zgambo told The Maravi Post that on October 24 2020, the victim together with her siblings went to the accused person’s house to ask for help since they stayed for three days without food.

“Kamoto further told the court that after eating at around 20:00 hours, the accused person told the victim together with her siblings to spend a night there since it was late for the kids to go back home.

“When they were all asleep, the accused person wake up the victim and too her to his room where he defiled her. He then threatened the victim not to narrate the odeal to anyone or else she will die,” says Zgambo

Zgambo added, “Kamoto pleaded with the court for custodial sentence saying that that as a pastor, he is supposed to protect children and not to abuse them.

“He further told court that the victim trusted him that’s why he asked him for help but the accused person took advantage of her helplessness and took her innocence away, hence deserves a stiffer punishment to deter the would be offenders”.

Pastor Nkhoma was therefore convicted and sentenced on his own plea of guilty.

“I’m mitigation, Nkhoma pleaded for leniency because as a pastor, giving him custodial sentence will tarnish his image and that of the church. He said that many will suffer since he is taking care of many orphans as well as the church hence asked the court to tamper justice with mercy.

“Passing judgement, her worship Shyreen Chirwa concurred with the state that as a leader, the accused person was supposed to protect children and not abuse them. She further said that cases of defilement and rape are rising in the country such that she will not entertain anyone who does such malpractice, hence slapped him to 14 years imprisonment with hard labour,” says publicist Zgambo
