Muluzi preaches peace, unity ahead of Malawi fresh presidential poll

Muluzi preaches peace, unity ahead of Malawi fresh presidential poll

Mzuzu: Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) and United Democratic Front (UDF) alliance running mate for the forthcoming coming fresh presidential election, Atupele Muluzi has asked Malawians to desist from politics of castigating one another to avoid political violence.

Muluzi was speaking Sunday at Mchengautuwa CCAP of the Livingstonia Synod Church where he attended a church service.

“I want to ask Malawians to stop politics of castigation as that has the potential to raise political temperature and violence,” said Muluzi.

Quoting John 14 verse 27 where the Bible says ‘Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world gives,’ the DPP-UDF alliance running mate said peace is fundamental for any nation to develop.

“Jesus Christ did not leave anything to his disciples but peace because he knew that where there is peace everything is possible,” he said.

He said the country has been going through turbulent times for the past 12 months due to political intolerance which has robbed people’s right to enjoy peace.

“We have to be united irrespective of our tribal, political and religious allegiance as we are all Malawians,” he said.

Muluzi said the church has an important role in ensuring that there is always peaceful coexistence amongst Malawians.

“The message from President Prof. Peter Mutharika is that people should be united as the country prepares for the fresh presidential election and people must pray for unity and prosperity for a better Malawi.

Parish Minister for Mchengautuwa CCAP, Reverend Alfred Ntonga advised politicians to be in the forefront condemning any form of violence.

“I appeal to all political leaders to be in the forefront condemning any form of violence taking place across the country because if they don’t, Malawians will feel that the leaders condone such behaviours,” he said.

Ntonga applauded Muluzi for attending the church service saying it was an honour for the church.

Muluzi donated K1 million towards development activities at the church and K400, 000 to Rejoice Mchengautuwa CCAP Women Choir.

Muluzi was accompanied by DPP officials who included Minister of Health and the party’s treasurer general, Jappie Mhango, DDP Vice President for the north, Goodall Gondwe, DPP Regional Governor for the north, Christopher Mzomera Ngwira among others.

Minister Jappie Mhango behind Rumphi chiefs, Livingstonia Synod fight

Minister of Transport Jappie Mhango is alleged to be the muster minder of the war between the Livingstonia Synod and traditional leaders in Rumphi, Maravi Post has learnt.

It is alleged that Mhango who is also the MP for the district wants to prove to President Peter Mutharika that he control the district despite the fracas at the burial ceremony.

According to our reliable source, Mhango gave K100, 000 to each chief [from Rumphi] take part in the process.

The war between the two started during the burial of Themba la Themba Chikulamayembe in Rumphi where the district chiefs accuse Livingstonia Synod of disrupting the whole ceremony especially for asking Malawi Congress Party President Dr Lazarus Chakwera as well as UTM interim President Dr Saulos Chilima to make a speech after President Peter Mutharika.

The development according to the chiefs and government was against the country’s constitution which bars everyone from making a speech at government function after the President.

However, at the same function after Synod remarks, one of  the late Chikulamayembe councilor while condemning the Synod also faulted the organizers for not including Chakwera and Chilima on the speech list saying it was unacceptable.

The councillor further apologized to the Synod for the development.

Ironically, a day later, some chiefs chiefs penned the Synod to apologize them and the bereaved family.

The said chiefs also hold a press conference on the same.

While denying to apologize, the Synod through its moderator Rev. Chipofya said government and the chiefs are the one suppose to apologize them.

After seeing that the mission was unaccomplished, Mhango asked Rev. Mwafulirwa of the same Synod to organize some clergies and hold a press conference against their secretary Rev. Nyondo and Chipofya.

Mhango then asked Rev Mwafulirwa to produce a Budget of any amount.

“Please hold a press conference with  your fellow clergies against Rev. Nyondo and Chipofya. This will make President Mutharika happy as he was annoyed during that day” said Mhango.

Chipofya then produced a K1.5 million budget to cutter 25 members of clergies within the Synod and 10 journalists.

Mhango’s mobile phone was out of reach when contacted for a comment.

AFORD seeks for Chakufwa Chihana recognition on fight for democratic change

MZUZU-MaraviPost)-The Alliance for Democracy (AFORD) party members over the weekend asked Malawians to recognize its Party’s founder, the late Chakufwa Thom Chihana, saying he was a genuine politician who fought for Malawi’s democracy.

The call comes following Government’s attitude of failing to recognize Chihana as a national hero.

The politics of regionalism has been attributed to the failure to honor Chihana’s name to remain in the history of Malawi’s multiparty politics.

AFORD Vice-President, Martha Chiumia, voices these sentiments in Mzuzu during a Chakufwa Chihana’s fundraising dinner that was organised by Revamped AFORD Movement. Continue reading AFORD seeks for Chakufwa Chihana recognition on fight for democratic change

RUMPHI-(MaraviPost)– The dust is refusing to settle down at Livingstonia Synod of Church of Central Africa Presbyterian (CCAP), with the spate of disruption that rocked the on-going General Administrative Conference (GAC) at Ekwendeni Mission in Rumphi district.

This is in sharp contrast with its counterpart, the Blantyre Synod that held its conference in the past week where it elected new leadership without much ado.

The ongoing Livingstonia Synod GAC conference was on Saturday, disrupted for close to two hours after delegates failed to agree whether the conference should continue or the moderator should suspend the meeting and deliberate the issues during the Synod’s General Assembly. Livingstonia Synod office politics: Pro-DPP reverend Nyasulu demoted

BLANTYRE-(MaraviPost)—The synod of the Livingstonia church has transferred Reverend Timothy Nyasulu from the synod’s headquarters to Kondowe in Rumphi, where he will head the Station and be Chaplain for University of Livingstonia.

The transfer comes barely five days after the synod conducted elections which saw fierce critic of the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) emerging a winner defeating Nyasulu who was allegedly to have much financial support from the DPP officials.

This means Nyasulu has been demoted as Education Secretary for the synod under General Secretary’s office, and he has been replaced by Reverend Vincent Kalua.

According to The Times, Reverend Douglas Chipofya who came fourth during the elections but was a day later elected as Moderator-Elect has been sent to Ekwendeni Theological College to teach ministers.

Ministers who were behind Nyasulu have been transferred to churches in rural areas and some of the affected ministers are Reverend Zina Sibande and Makuni Gondwe who were at Mchengatuba and Katawa within Mzuzu City, and have been posted to Njuyu and Rumphi, respectively.

Reverend Maurice Munthali has been recalled from Area 47 in Lilongwe to Katawa Congregation in Mzuzu replacing Gondwe.

Reverend Joshua Nyangulu who was heading Ekwendeni Mission has been sent to Nkhamenya and Reverend Lumbani Munthali is heading to Bolero in Rumphi from Ifumbo in Chitipa.

Nyondo switched off his mobile phone just after introducing the subject. His moderator Reverend John Gondwe refused to answer and he referred us back to Nyondo. Reverend Nyasulu also refused to comment on the matter.

Two camps have emerged in the synod following the re-election of Nyondo as the General Secretary for synod.

The second session of the committee meeting after finalising the elections programme on Saturday saw some ministers who voted for Nyasulu not contributing in the deliberations.

Some were heard murmuring, accusing Nyondo of character assassination towards his challenger Nyasulu by implicating him that he was funded by the ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) during campaigns.

The division was also visible when ministers were taking lunch around 3 o’clock as those who were behind Nyondo sat separately from others as they mocked Nyasulu’s supporters.

Nyondo admitted that the church is divided but argued that it is because of political parties’ interference into the synod assembly agenda.

He has also admitted that the church was corrupted towards the elections, arguing he received reports that some church ministers pocketed money for campaign.

He, therefore, also accused retired ministers of being used to foster divisions in the church, describing their conduct as due to poverty.
