Honourable Banda’s legacy transcends mere musical talent; it epitomizes a deep-rooted commitment to social justice and equality. His lyrics resonated powerfully with the struggles and aspirations of marginalized and disadvantaged communities, making him a steadfast advocate for the people.

"As we come together to mourn Honourable Lucius Banda's passing, we recognize the immense impact he has had on our society," expressed His Excellency, Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika, Former President of Malawi and President of the DPP, alongside Her Excellency Professor, Madam Gertrude Mutharika, Former First Lady. "His music was more than entertainment; it was a beacon of hope during tumultuous times, shedding light on the inequalities faced by many Malawians."

Honourable Banda’s music possessed a unifying power, bridging diverse backgrounds and political affiliations with its message of love, peace, and unity. Beyond his musical prowess, he was a dedicated activist who utilized his platform to effect positive societal change, paving the way for subsequent artists to use their music as a catalyst for social transformation.

“Nutricom’s Kombucha remains a healthier beverage, nothing has changed”- Nutricom Food & Beverages Ltd owner Munnangi

LILONGWE-(MaraviPost)-Nutricom Food and Beverages Limited, the country’s leading manufacturer of health drinks including Kombucha juice, has dismissed social media reports stating that the product has lost taste to a watery mouth feel due to deformed bottles.

This comes into notice as Kombucha in deformed bottles has been observed on the Malawi market, which raised speculations that the company was also sold.?

In an interview with The Malawi Post on Wednesday, August 9, 2023, Nutricom’s owner, Raj Munnangi, explained the process of making Kombucha and ruled out any misconceptions that are circulating about the product and the company.

He added that it is simply impossible to lose taste and mouthfeel because of the company’s comprehensive manufacturing and health guidelines, strict quality control checks, and highest standards in fermentation and packaging procedures.

Raj emphasized the need for consumers to understand how Kombucha is made and how proper storage is the key to keeping the product intact.

“The bottle deformity that you see sometimes is because of the excess carbonation produced by the product when kept in a hot environment like directly under the sun for a long time or because of the hot and poor storage conditions in the retail stores.

“Bottle deformity does not alter the nutrient content of the product in any form. Regardless of the bottle shape, the product is still healthy as usual and provides the consumer with the same freshness, the same probiotics, and the same health benefits,” he added.

Munnangi explains further, “Extended exposure to the sun gives Kombucha more fizz like champagne hence you see more bubbles popping out of the bottle. The sound, fizz, and crisp taste are all the result of carbonation.

“Kombucha remains a healthy juice made from tea and mushroom culture (SCOBY: Symbiotic Colony Of Bacteria and Yeast) and is said to help the liver to work efficiently, improve digestion, and fight insomnia, colitis, and burn fats”.

Studies have proven that the drink is extremely popular with people with cholesterol and diabetes.

Kombucha promotes healthy liver function by removing toxins and destroying free radicals.

Also, the drink is known to have anti-microbial/anti-fungal properties all while being chemopreventive.

Literature shows that Kombucha has been researched in laboratories all over the world from China, India, Serbia, Russia, Germany, Tunisia, Egypt, Iran, Korea, and beyond.

“The juice is purely a soft drink however due to natural fermentation, there are slight traces of alcohol in decimal percentages,” says Raj.

Raj adds further, “All over the world, people are becoming health conscious and are moving away from drinking sugary beverages. Developed countries are struggling with a lot of health issues like obesity, diabetes, BP, and many others. Most of these problems circle back to unhealthy food habits.”

“Incorporating Kombucha into a regular diet may help improve metabolism and reduce sugar load on the body. Kombucha offers the public a really good alternative that is refreshing to drink and yet offers many health benefits. We at Nutricom continuously strive to provide healthy choices to our consumers”.

Echoing the same, Malawi’s music legendary Lucius Banda testifies on Kombucha, “I have been taking Kombucha for years now. It’s a healthy and nutritious energy drink for patients with diabetes”.

NutriCom is an example of a local company that is adding value to the country’s agricultural produce, an industry that has been lacking for quite some time while maintaining a motto of “Keep Africa Healthy”.

Nutricom manufactures Kombucha Juice, Ginger Kombucha, Rosemary health juice, and Malambe juice drinks, which are certified by the Malawi Bureau of Standards (MB).

Apart from Malawi, Nutricom’s Kombucha is also being manufactured in Zambia and Tanzania.

“Stop competing within yourselves”- Lucius Banda advises fellow musicians

By Chisomo Phiri

BLANTYRE-(MaraviPost)-Malawi music icon Lucius Banda popular known by his stage name ‘Sir Soldier Lucius Banda’ has urged his fellow musicians in the country to stop the habit of competing themselves whenever they want to release a new song and instead take the music to the world level.

Banda made the advice in the video shared on his Facebook Page on Tuesday May 17, 2022.

Lucius Banda: Stop competing each other in music

In the video, Banda says he has noted that there is a growing tendency of musicians fighting themselves when they are realizing new songs and albums which is not necessary if they want Malawi’s music industry to grow.

The ‘ Mabala’ hit maker says as a musician who has stayed in the industry for years now, he has never seen a musician calling his or her own song a hit.

He says traditionally, musicians just produce and release songs they are best at not competing with others because every musician is best at his or her own.

“As musicians let’s just release songs. It’s people who will call it a hit or whatsoever,” advises Banda.

Banda says a musician calling his/ her own song the biggest hit, song of the year or whatever making the song looking like is best, comes a problem when people receive the same song in a different way.

“I want to encourage you my fellow musicians. Let’s just concentrate on producing music. Works of art must not come with an element of competition because every artist is unique on their own and every artist different on their own, ” says Banda.

He says it is more worrying that the musicians themselves are those on forefront pumping up themselves calling themselves superior which is completely a wrong journey if Malawi is to grow in music industry.

The music genius urges fellow musicians to concentrate on writing good songs that can compete on international level.

“Instead of competing yourselves you fellow Malawi musicians, I would want to see you competing with world up there. Let’s start thinking and analyzing what makes Barba Boy fill up the stadium, fill up venues in the USA, why is Davido performing in London and looking like Mike Jackson in those days,” says Banda.

Banda says the habit cannot make them break it through and join their friends in Tanzania who are fully booked worldwide.

Malawians have indeed witnessed musicians fighting each other for fame, leaving their followers fighting too and Banda’s remarks are on point.

One very good example is that of Onesmus who one time came on open air telling his fellow artists to release their songs before him realising what he called a hit song the whole country.

In the similar case, Namadingo and Eli Njuchi have in fihgt over their two recent released songs ‘ sugar’ and ‘ GUGGU” as Namadingo dissed Njuchi to have his song ‘ GuGuGu ‘ being a hit song for only one day whereas ‘ Sugar’ still hit forever.

Lucius Banda, a well known music icon in Malawi, was born on 17 August 1970 in Sosola Village in Group Village headman Kapalamula and Traditional Authority Nsamala in Balaka District of Southern Malawi.

His music legacy dates way back in 1983 when he was thirteen years old when he started singing with his brother Paul Banda and leader of Alleluya Band.

He first appeared on stage in 1985 with his brother’s led Alleluya Band.

Lucius Banda started his music career while in elementary school (Primary) at Mponda Full Primary School which lies near the catholic parish in Balaka.

To further his music career Lucius Banda decided to go to music school in South Africa.

This dream was fulfilled in 1993 when he joined Dorkey house in Johannesburg, where he spent one full year studying music.

He recorded his first album titled ‘Son of a Poor Man’ at shandel music studio with the help of producer George Arigone (an Argentinian) on backing vocals.

He had Nomhlanlha nkhize and the now famous gospel singer Debora Freser.

His album became popular because of hits like Mabala, Get up stand up, Linda and Life On Earth. From there he launched his long career of music which takes him to date.

Bunch of betrayers; DPP and some ‘greedy’ legislatures from PP, UDF and independent shoot down electoral reform bills

The ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) and some ‘greedy’ Members of Parliament (MPs) from the former ruling Peoples Party (PP), United Democratic Front (UDF) as well as independent on Thursday shocked Malawians when they shot down the much awaited electoral reform bills presented by the Minister of Justice, Samuel Tembenu.

This is the first time for the government side legislatures to deny a bill presented by the Executive.

However, only main opposition Malawi Congress Party (MCP) and AFORD legislatures supported the bill together with some few MPs from independent, PP and Lucius Banda of UDF.

The rejected Bill on Electoral Reform include the Transitional Arrangement (Assumption of Offfice by the President and Vice-President Bill) as well as Presidential, Parliamentray and Local Government Elections (PPLGE) Bill.

In the vote of the Bill, the ‘no’ votes from government were 97 against ‘yes’ 65 from opposition on Transitional Arrangement Bill while 97 government side voted against the PPLGE Bill from proceeding to committee stage as 64 from the opposition voted ‘yes’ and 29 absentees.

Legislators, mostly on the government side, had put personal and political interest ahead of national interests giving citizens the raw deal.

Opposition leader and Malawi Congress Party (MCP) President Lazatus Chakwera stated that actions by government members of Parliament (MPs) in rejecting the pieces of legislation is “betrayal of the highest order.”

“They are sacrificing their own President and Minister of Justice. Here i s a Cabinet that says it is ready to present bills to Parliament and the same Cabinet rejects the bills,” said Chakwera.

Chakwera disclosed that the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) led government has “betrayed Malawians.

The PPLGE Bill harmonised the two electoral legislations in line with the provision of a tripartite election in the Malawian Constitution. Among other things it proposed 50 plus one percent system to determine the winning presidential candidate which government also extended to MPs and ward councillors.

However, Salima North-West MP Jessie Kabwila (Malawi Congress Party-MCP) observed that DPP Government only brought the Bills to Parliament to hoodwink Malawians and avoid the protests which were being organised by Public Affairs Committee (PAC).

This now means the two Bills will have to be sent back to Ministry of Justice and Constitutional Affairs for redrafting before being tabled again in the House.

The Special Law Commission recommended the introduction of 50+1 percent system of electing the country’s President while maintaining First-Past-The-Post (FPTP) system to consolidate acceptability and legitimacy of the elected Head of State.

Malawi’s Impakt Events invites Jamaican Kenyatta Hill and Culture for June concert

Kenyatta Hill

LILONGWE-(MaraviPost)- Reggae music lovers in the country are expected to be marveled with live performance by Jamaican reggae band, Kenyatta Hill and Culture, for a music extravaganza.

The country’s Impakt  Event courted the Jamaican legend to hold the live show music shows, slated for Mibawa Multipurpose Hall, and Civo Stadium in Blantyre and Lilongwe on June 2 and 3, 2017 respectively.

Impakt Event manager, cum-politician Lucius Banda, is quoted as having told the Nation newspaper that the Jamaican outfit is expected to jet into the country on May 31 for the two concerts.

Banda said the reggae legends are also excited to visit and light up Malawi, with the live performances for their first time in Malawi.

The manager disclosed that the Jamaican band has assured the firm of igniting fireworks during the concerts, with the good news that the group will perform songs that Malawians know.

Banda popularly known as “Soldier,” added that the list of popular songs to be played by the band, proposed by its local fans via the social media page of Lucius Banda, and Impakt Event include Christopher Columbus, One Stone, Peace, Love and Harmony, International Herb, Humble Africa, Zion Gate among others.

“Culture is a band that has over 20 albums, which span from the time of legendary Joseph Hill. So, what did is send the band a list of songs that reggae fans in Malawi are conversant with, to ensure that the concerts ignites the needed spark,” Banda said.

Impakt Event has been bringing international artists into the country for the past two years, raising music Malawi’s map, but none of the locals has managed to secure collaboration of songs after these concerts.

Lucius Banda-DPP battle turns nasty; Chiefs forced to publicly discredit him

Lucius Banda: chiefs forced to discredit me publicly

BLANTYRE-(MaraviPost)—Balaka north constituency Member of Parliament, Lucius Banda, who is also United Democratic Front (UDF) senior member, on Tuesday alleged that chiefs in his constituency were forced to denounce him in front of cameras of one of the television stations in the country.

Banda, posted on his facebook wall, accusing the district DPP governor of arranging the nasty politics.
“As l am in Lilongwe doing parliamentary committee work, I keep receiving phone calls from chiefs of Balaka who are saying this afternoon they were forced to denounce me in front of video cameras from one of the TV stations.
?”They were told that if they don’t speak ill about me to the TV crew, they will be fired from their chieftainsy,” Banda wrote on the FB wall.
?He further alleges that the event was arranged by the district governor of a party in power (DPP). He said he wants to assure the chiefs they are being abused, but that he understands their situation.
The musician-turned-politician, said God on hid side, and that he shall not fear a human being.
Banda’s allegations come amid a fierce verbal war between him and the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) over the ruling party and UDF alliance.
He is the only UDF legislator who openly defied his party’s position to move from the opposition to the government side in Parliament.
Recently, Banda exchanged words with President Peter Mutharika over the alliance issue.
Mutharika said Banda was “misguided” during the official opening of the Mangochi Technical College on March 25. Mangochi is a UDF stronghold.
Mutharika said the two parties would continue working together despite strong opposition from “one misguided Member of Parliament”, in an apparent reference to the legislator.
Reacting, Banda said the president made the remarks out of ignorance.
“As a UDF Member of Parliament, and, indeed, the party’s leader in the House at the time the so-called coalition was agreed upon, I have not seen, nor [sic] have I ever been presented with a signed document cementing a working union between the DPP and my beloved United Democratic Front,” Banda said in the statement.
The DPP, as previous governing political parties before, is good at using the state-owned television MBC, to discredit those deemed to be political enemies. Malawi Congress Party (MCP) President Lazarus Chakwera has already fallen victim to the television’s foul politics.

Lucius Banda: Mutharika made the remarks out of ignorance

The Member of Parliament (MP) for Balaka north, the eastern district of Malawi Lucius Banda on Sundayattacked President Peter Mutharika over the remarks the President made on the alliance between the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) and United Democratic Front (UDF).

During the launch of Community Technical Colleges in the eastern region, which was held in Mangochi, President Mutharika accused Banda of being against the DPP-UDF alliance.

“The relationship between the DPP and the UDF is going smoothly. Our aim is to help each other in developing the country and I assure you that it will not end,” Mutharika said.

“However, there is only one person (referring to Lucius Banda) who is trying to destroy our relationship but (he) will not succeed.”the President said.

In response to the attack, Banda, who is the only UDF MP refused to join the coalition, accused Mutharika of speaking out of ignorance.

According to him, there is no memorandum of understanding between the two parties, hence Mutharika’s remarks was unfortunate.

“I think the President is misled, he is a lawyer and is not expected to comment on this issue especially because there is no legal documents,” Banda said.

Some political pundits have also criticized the alliance and spoken against it, saying it is weakening opposition parties in the country.

However, while admitting that there is no signed documents between the two parties, the UDF general-secretary Ken Ndanga, defended the DPP-UDF alliance is aimed at changing the political atmosphere in the country.
