Suspected MCP zealots hack DPP supporters against peaceful Lilongwe’s Blue Parade

LILONGWE-(MaraviPost)-In uncivilized and dictatorial tendency of suspected President Lazarus Chakwera’s Malawi Congress Party (MCP) zealots on Saturday morning hacked Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) supporters who were to commerce Blue Parade in the capital Lilongwe.

According to the eye, witnesses there was political violence coupled with ugly scenes at Mbowe in Lilongwe where DPP supporters were chased and hacked and sustained injuries during the altercation.

The Blue Parade leader and DPP Mulanje Bale Constituency legislator lawmaker Victor Musowa told Zodiak online that the attack was sparked after alleged MCP supporters wanted to block their Blue Parade which was set to commence from Mbowe, hacking and injuring DPP supporters in the process.

“About 25 DPP supporters have sustained various degrees of injuries and were rushed to Kamuzu Central Hospital in the city,” said Musowa.

But MCP Spokesperson Ezekiel Ching’oma has distanced the party from the fracas.

Ching’oma said MCP is a party of peace.

The development comes amid President Chakwera’s losing public popularity ahead of the 2025 general polls due to poor leadership since 2020.

Chakwera leadership is characterised by nepotism, high cost of living, inflation, food crisis, and fuel, forex, and drug shortages.

Opinion: What Is The Status Of Politics In Malawi As 2023 Comes To An End?

By

Burnett Munthali

Politics plays a major role in Malawi and is prevalent in everyday’s analyses and comments on the subject. Malawians agree on many issues but cover so much on political debates because everyone holds his/her opinion and think they are the best opinion. The other thing is that many people are not ready to listen to dissenting views and lack the patience of reading or waiting to the end before they can comment. As a result of this, many discussions become rough and unhealthy on the matter, they bruise each other so much with provocative words and even songs. This article takes a brief look at politics in Malawi as the political climate gains momentum towards 2025.

Politics of Malawi takes place in a framework of a presidential representative democratic republic, whereby the President of Malawi is both head of state and head of government, and of a multi-party system. Executive power is exercised by the government. However, There’s a common belief and saying that “government does not lose elections because they have all the resources and machinery within their reach to stay and win elections.” But I personally have a different view on this assertion because you will remember very well MCP lost in 1994, President Joyce Banda of PP lost elections in 2014 then President Arthur Peter Mutharika lost government to the opposition MCP and UTM Tonse Alliance in 2020 during fresh Presidential election following the ruling by the Constitutional Court.

The Government of Malawi has been a multi-party democracy since 1994. Under the 1995 constitution, the president, who is both chief of state and head of the government, is chosen through universal direct suffrage every 5 years. On the contrary, some people are scared that they are likely to find themselves under an oppressive government that will soon stifle their human rights. One of the greatest fears comes based on established facts that MCP youth were sent to Ntakantaka for military training. This very sensitive issue was raised in Parliament, the house of records and government did not give a convincing response to that effect. Ntakantaka is a training base for Malawi Police but this time we had complete civilians going for training at the base at a time there was no recruitment for Police officers to train. Isn’t this Malawi Young Pioneer (MYP) being established in disguise? Shortly, this government is upto something sinister. Let’s wait for the right time but this is a warning shot!

Political parties: Malawi Congress Party(MCP), the first party to rule Malawi, United Democratic Front (UDF, the first democratic ruling party after MCP), Democratic Progressive Party (DPP), United Transformation Movement (UTM), Alliance for Democracy (AFORD) are the main and well established political parties. DPP and UDF are the two main opposition parties in Parliament expected to form the next government. The main battle will obviously between DPP and MCP and precisely, it will be between Arthur Peter Mutharika and Lazarus Maccarthy Chakwera. This alone raises people’s anticipation as the political twist between the two giants goes back to the political WrestleMania arena shortly.

Joyce Banda and Bingu Campaigning

The current president is Lazarus Chakwera sworn in as president of Malawi on 28 June 2020. He became very popular with his Hi-5 campaign promises including that of one million jobs, cheap fertilizers, cheap essential commodities, including a bullet train. Malawians say they haven’t seen this manifesto delivered to them after winning elections for three years now as they enter the fourth year.

Malawi has a multi-party system with over 40 registered political parties. The political process in Malawi is such that parties are voted into power. Parties participate in an electoral process. As at now, one wouldn’t be wrong to say that the major political parties are DPP, MCP, UTM and UDF. You will also remember that this is the same pattern of alliances that were formed in the 2020 fresh presidential election. The above four political parties are repositioning themselves to win 2025 elections and form the next government. Which Alliance will Malawians go for?

The National Assembly has 193 members of Parliament (MPs) who are directly elected in single-member constituencies using the simple majority (or first-past-the-post) system and serve five-year terms. I remember new demarcations for new constituencies were created which means we are going to have more than 193 MPs in the near future. This means an extra budget will be needed to pay additional MPs in the August House and more financial resources will be needed for Constituency Development Fund (CDF), I only hope government has planned very well in this area and is ready to meet the extra cost.

Hastings Kamuzu Banda (born in 1898, near Kasungu, Malawi died on November 25, 1997, Johannesburg, South Africa) first president of Malawi (formerly Nyasaland) and the principal leader of the Malawi nationalist movement. I will always remember Kamuzu Banda on food security and I think that is the reason why Malawians entrusted the current MCP leadership to lead them in the new government with the hope that they would continue with the legacy and prioritize food security. At this point I leave the ball into the hands of Malawians to judge whether Malawi is food secure today or not.

Malawi is one of the poorest countries in the world, ranked 174 of 189 countries on the Human Development Index. Over half the population lives in poverty, and one-fifth in extreme poverty. Access to clean water, sanitation, and health care remain significant challenges for many Malawians, especially in rural areas. When Tonse Alliance Government brought forward the idea of free water connection as one of its campaign strategies, it was critically considered a good move that would enable millions of citizens access clean water as part of human development. Disappointingly, the free water connection ideology has not materialized and Malawians keep waiting that at some stage, government may implement the concept.

The history of the MCP is that it was formed as a successor party to the banned Nyasaland African Congress when the country, then known as Nyasaland, was under British rule. The MCP, under Hastings Banda, presided over Malawian independence in 1964, and from 1966 to 1993 was the only legal party in the country. Today MCP formed government in 2020 with the help of UTM with the aim of, what they claimed, granting them economic freedom and development to the people of Malawi. Malawians are asking themselves today if that has been achieved or not. At some point, people are forced to look back at the previous government as a way of comparing with the present governments to understand whether this country is moving forward or not.

Malawi will go to the next polls in 2025 to elect their next President and government. The political temperature is already getting hot before the campaign officially kicks off. 2024 seems to be a campaign period already as everyone is taking their political positions ready for the battle.

Peter Mutharika

Finally, The most interesting thing about the coming campaign is that Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika and President Reverend Lazarus Chakwera are likely to meet on the ballot paper as they have both shown interest to stand at their respective party conventions. Therefore, they are both likely to represent their political parties in the presidential election which is coming soon. The big interesting question is: What will President Reverend Lazarus Chakwera say to the people of Malawi during this coming campaign after promising so much in 2019 and 2020? Time is coming closer so let’s wait and see. As the two giants enter the ring in what looks like a rematch, it is also interesting to figure out which side Vice President Saulos Chilima will finally take in 2025 add he had chosen to keep quiet despite all he is going through. Will he continue working with Tonse Alliance or start working with the opposition? Some people think that Chilima might even think of going solo while others argue that he may simply spill the rice into the sand after noticing that things are not moving in his favor in government.

By Dorica Mtenje

LILONGWE(MaraviPost) Malawi congress Party(MCP)Central Regional Governor, Ebron Chilondola has warned members of Parliament to stop abandoning their community members following the Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) ward demacation.

MCP drank with power

Chilondola made these remarks on Saturday in Dowa after a Development rally for Abel Kayembe in Dowa West constituency.

Chilondola said all the community members deserve equal rights until 2025 as they all voted for the members that are in office now.

“It is sad that some members are shunning away their responsibilities claiming to own one ward of their whole constituency, wards found members running the whole constituency and it has to be like that till 2025,” said Chilondola

In his remarks, Member of Parliament for Dowa West ,Abel Kayembe said he has managed to bring development to both Dowa west  and Ndolera ward.

He said the community will now enjoy maximum security as he managed to bring in a police unit and a library to sharpen the knowledge of community members.

The police Unit has been officially opened by Minister of Homeland security Zikhale Ng’oma.

The rally was spiced up by 1st Deputy Speaker of Parliament, Madalitso Kazombo and other six members of Parliament.

Malawi political analysts cast doubt of opposition ousting DPP minus electoral coalition

By Mwai Nkhoma
With just six months to go before the country goes to the poll’s, there is  still no signs as to whether the opposition parties will form a coalition a development which political experts  have observed that the move will lead to the ruling Democratic Progressive party(DPP) remaining in power come 2019.
Chancellor College  based Political Scientist Mustaph Hussein who has since advised the main opposition Malawi Congress Party(MCP) to consider forming a coalition with some opposition parties.
He said forming  a coalition would  increase MCP chances of winning next year’s Tripartite Elections.
“The opposition should make sure that it leaves no stone unturned  by forming a formidable block that can ensure it gets votes from al region’s of the country that way they shall emerge victorious come next year”, said Hussein.
Hussein cited a possible coalition between  MCP and People’s party that it can give MCP much needed votes from the southern region where PP has many supporter’s.
“These parties has got different strong holds MCP is more popular in the center region than  other parties while for instance PP is more popular in some parts of the southern region a combination of the two parties can wrap in more votes all they  can do join hands” said he.
He also said the opposition should brace for a tougher time  should the much touted alliance between United Democratic Front (UDF) and DPP come to fruition  saying the coalition between the two parties would seal victory for the ruling Party.
“These two parties  UDF and DPP has got majority of voters in the southern region which has the highest population in the country  so if these too come together and the opposition parties chooses not to form a coalition that would spell disaster for them” said Hussein.
Another analyst who asked  not to be named  the only way the opposition can easily wrestle power from DPP is by forming coalition saying failing to do so would divide the opposition votes.
“When a party is in government it does every thing it can  to consolidate its grip, this is why the opposition should swallow their pride and reach out to each other  so that they can form a strong team that can topple DPP”, he said.
He said the delay in forming  a coalition by the main opposition parties like MCP and PP shows just how greedy they are all in clinching to power.
They know that forming a coalition with other parties  positions  would mean sharing key positions a thing they don’t want, this is very unfortunate because they are pushing for their agendas first instead of ordinary Malawian’s,” he added.
The political landscape in the country has been gripped with electoral fever as the date for next year’s Tripartite Elections which is slated for May next year is drawing closer.

MCP “black sheep” Mkaka left in the cold for defying Chakwera’s unity calls

LILONGWE-(MaraviPost)-The main opposition Malawi Congress Party'(MCP) “black sheet” member Eisenhower Mkaka has been left in the cold following his defying tendencies of the party’s leadership unity calls.

Mkaka who has been acting as both MCP Publicity Secretary (PS) and Secretary General (SG) before party President Dr. Lazarus Chakwera’s December 1, 2017 reinstatement of some National Executive Members (NEC), fails to swallow his pride for unity course.

On Friday, Mkaka who held Second Deputy SG, a position which does not exist in the party structures, told Zodiak Broadcasting Station (ZBS) that the press conference which Dr. Jessie Kabwira held in the capital Lilongwe on various issues that has been affecting Malawians in the year ending 2017, was done without the blessing of the party leadership.

He went further arguing that Dr. Kabwira was fired that MCP’ NEC has not reinstated her hence the Friday presser was out of Kabwira’s personal interest not of the party.

This did not go down well with SG Gustavo Kaliwo who told the same radio station on Saturday that the party was not happy with infighting on positions.

Kaliwo clearly backed Kabwira who is also the Member of Parliament (MCP) for Salima North-West that she remains the party legitimate spokesperson arguing that Mkaka’s position does not exist in MCP current constitution.

“I am equally unhappy with this infighting of who holds whats in the party. As the secretary general of MCP, has not written any letter informing the public that Dr. Kabwira was fired from her position. She remains the legitimate MCP spokesperson.

“With the current MCP constitution, Mkaka position does not exist. So, he dont have the mandate to speak for the party. If any issue rises that needs the party’s verification, better consult MCP President, Vice and my office of the Secretary General,” clears out the mess Kaliwo.

Even ZBS reportedly verified with other senior party members backing Kaliwo and Kabwira’s stand on the matter consequently leaving Mkaka alone as a “Black sheet” without a backing including party leadership Chakwera and Richard Msowoya.

This also just vindicate The Maravi Post article came up with early this month that some three MCP lawmakers Amon Nkhata, Richard Chimwendo Banda and Dimba were unhappy with the party’s leader Chakwera decision to mend fences with members deemed to be rebels, “Nkholokolo”.

Some of notable “Nkholokolos” (rebels) including MCP SG Kaliwo, Joseph Njovuyalema, MCP PS Kabwira, MCP treasure Tony Kandiero and MCP Director of Research Lingison Belekanyama among others whose positions have been reversed to them per 2013 MCP convention.

The trio even threatened to quit if Chakwera decision materialized in its totality per announcement made during the December 1, press conference.

Inside MCPs sources at time told The Maravi Post that the three lawmakers who have been behind feeding the party’s leadership lies which ended up labeling some members, “Nkholokolo”.

Despite the trio’s threat to quit the party, the source added that Chakwera told the disgruntled legislators that the matter was under the bridge which cannot be reversed as the party was towards rebuilding a head of 2019 elections.

The MCP President who is also opposition leaders in Malawi Parliament condemned and challenged them to quit because he is there to defend the party’s constitution.

But one of the lawmakers Chimwendo disputed the allegations arguing that he was not aware of such plans of against anyone in the party.

Chakwera publically re-instituted party positions including MCPs First Deputy President (Richard Msowoya), deputy president (Macdonald Lombola), Secretary General (Gustavo Kaliwo), Treasure General (Tony Kandiero) and deputy SG (Chatonda Kaunda).

This follows the inner circle meeting Chakwera had with them prior to the news conference at the party’s headquarters in the capital Lilongwe after a year of loggerheads.

Other re-instituted party positions were; Tony Kandiero moves back to his elected position as Party’s Treasurer General replacing Rhino Chiphiko while Khumbize Chiponda takes over from Chipuwa as Deputy Treasurer General.

Louis Chakhwantha moved back from Director of Youth to Legal Advisor whilst Lobin Lowe moves back to Director of Youth from Organizing Secretary.

Mkaka moved back to deputize Moses Khombe in Organizing Directorate such that Dorothy Chirambo takes back her position as National Director of Women Affairs.

Henry Kamata shifted back to Director of Elections as Veteran politician Lingison Belekanyama reclaims his position as Director of Research

Dr. Jessie Kabwira went back to her position as Party’s Publicity Secretary to be deputized by Ezekiel Ching’oma.

The MCP President disclosed that management meeting which will follow the party’s 2013 National Executive Committee (NEC) to decide on convention.

Lazarus Chakwera who is failing to run MCP says he can do a better Job as Malawi President

Chakwera greeting Chiefs in Malawi

LILONGWE(MaraviPost): Mired in internal party politics in the Malawi Congress Party(MCP), a man with unlimited ambitions to run Malawi Lazarus Chakwera called a press conference where he faulted the leadership of Peter Mutharika without offering tangible solutions.

“Our nation is in crisis. And in times of national crisis, leadership is critical. But unfortunately for us, the crisis we face is one of leadership itself. And so I have decided to address you directly on this issue, because the leadership of President Mutharika and his government is in a state of emergency, and it will take all of us working together to disabuse ourselves from its destructive effects, said Lazarus Chakwera.
