BLANTYRE-(MaraviPost)—The Judicial Service Commission has disclosed that it has not yet received communication on the resignation of the MEC Chairperson Dr. Jane Ansah to meet and nominate her replacement.

In an interview with Zodiak, Patemba said it’s either MEC itself or the Office of the President and Cabinet-OPC that are supposed to notify the judiciary about the development.

Patemba, however, assured that once they receive the notification, they will handle the matter with the urgency it deserves.

Ansah, on Thursday, May 21, 2020 finally resigned from her position after several attempts by the Human Rights Defenders Coalition (HRDC) to force her to leave office for mismanaging 2019 presidential poll.

She said she leaves the MEC with a clear conscious and convinced that she had done a good job.

Mpinganjira demands immediate arrest of ring leaders of ‘APM motorcade booing’ in Ndirande

BLANTYRE-(MaraviPost)—Deputy Minister of Defence, who is also a member of parliament of the Blantyre City Centre (Ndirande), Chipiliro Mpinganjira has demanded his constituents to immediately identify the ring leaders in the Thursday’s embarrassing incident in which people booed and pelted stones at the convoy of President Peter Mutharika.

Mutharika, who was the last presidential candidate to present his nomination papers at the Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC), paraded in the streets of Blantyre together with his new running mate Atupele Muluzi.

But according to a video footage which is in circulation on social media, people who are believed to be supporters of the Malawi Congress Party (MCP) and UTM spoiled the funny of the ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) faithful by booing and pelting stones at the presidential convoy.

Reacting, MP Mpinganjira has blamed what he called the criminal behaviour by opposition supporters and has since called upon his constituents to identify the perpetrators so that the law should take its course.

Mpinganjira’s reaction to the incident comes amid general feeling that the Malawi Police only acts when DPP officials or supporters are attacked.

However, Presidential spokesperson Mgeme Kalilani has downplayed reports that Mutharika’s motorcade was stoned saying the stoning could have been on cars of party supporters who had gone earlier before Mutharika.

Kalilani said Changed routes to return to Sanjika Palace because it was getting dark but he maintained that President Mutharika and his rung mate addressed people around Ndirande Market.

Malawi President Mutharika withholds assent to election bills

Presidential Press Secretary and Spokesperson, Mgeme Kalilani announced Mutharika’s decisions at a press briefing in Blantyre on Tuesday

By Yamikani Yapuwa

Blantyre, March 17, MaraviPost: President Peter Mutharika has withheld assenting to four Bills that Parliament passed during its February Sitting and rejected Parliament’s Public Appointments Committee (PAC) recommendations to fire Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) commissioners.

Presidential Press Secretary and Spokesperson, Mgeme Kalilani announced Mutharika’s decisions at a press briefing in Blantyre on Tuesday.

“His Excellency Professor Peter Mutharika has decided to inform the public on his decisions on two matters.

“The President received two requests from the National Assembly. The first request was for the President to consider removing commissioners of the Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC).

“The President has looked at the recommendations by the Public Appointments Committee and he does not agree with the recommendations and findings of PAC,” said Kalirani.

Kalirani said there are set procedures and laws that are supposed to be followed when a public officer is summoned for an administrative action which affects his or her life.

“In the finding of the President through analysis, it shows clearly the committee did not adhere to those laws in terms of hearing people.

“Secondly, it is the view of the President that it is quite strange that the committee has gone on to pronounce the commissioners as being incompetent whilst ignoring the fact that MEC did not only handle the presidential elections.

“It’s a fact that MEC handled the tripartite elections, the people were voting for President, Members of Parliament as well as councillors.

“Now we have the committee here saying MEC is incompetent only in relation to the results of the Presidential elections,” said Kalirani.

The Presidential Spokesperson further said the President finds that as contradictory and laughable because it is the same MEC that managed the Parliamentary and councillor’s election.

He said it would not be fair to fire them
