Chakwera’s Tonse Alliance Govt disastrous NEEF’s loans write off raises eyebrows

By Twink Jones Gadama

BLANTYRE-(MaraviPost)-The recent decision by the Malawi government to write off MK6 billion kwacha in loans disbursed by the National Economic Empowerment Fund (NEEF) is a troubling development that has raised serious concerns about accountability and transparency within the government.

Through NEEF, the organization was lending money to the poor to start businesses, with the hope of empowering them to become financially independent.

However, the decision to write off such a significant amount of money is not only a failure in leadership, but also sets a dangerous precedent for future governance in the country.

The fact that the beneficiaries of these loans were predominantly members of the Malawi Congress Party (MCP) raises suspicions about the government’s true intentions behind this decision.

It is no secret that the upcoming election is just around the corner, and it is alarming to think that the government may be using these loan write-offs as a way to garner favor from potential voters. This is a clear misuse of power and resources that should be held accountable for.

Furthermore, the decision to write off these loans not only undermines the efforts of NEEF to empower the poor and marginalized communities in Malawi, but it also reflects poorly on the overall governance of the country.

It sends the message that the government is willing to prioritize political gains over the welfare of its citizens, which is a dangerous path to go down.

This decision sets a dangerous precedent for future government actions, as it suggests that similar actions may be taken in the future to appease certain political interests.

The lack of transparency and accountability in this decision is also a cause for concern.

The government has failed to provide a clear explanation for why these loans were written off, and the public is left in the dark about the true motivations behind this decision.

This only further erodes trust in the government and raises questions about its commitment to serving the best interests of the people.

The decision by the Malawi government to write off k6 billion kwacha in loans disbursed by NEEF is a troubling development that must be condemned.

This action not only undermines the efforts of NEEF to empower the poor and marginalized communities in the country, but it also sets a dangerous precedent for future governance.

The lack of transparency and accountability in this decision only further highlights the need for stronger checks and balances within the government.

PMalawians deserve better, and it is important that they hold their leaders accountable for their actions.

“I’m already engaging all stakeholders for Mzuzu vendors to get modern facilities”- Chakwera

MZUZU-(MaraviPost)-Earlier on Saturday, March 9, 2024, President Reverend Lazarus Chakwera was warmly welcomed by Mzuzu vendors during his visit to the Central and Vigwagwa markets.

Later in the day Chakwera reciprocated with an invitation to the State Lodge where he continued with discussions.

Major issues that formed part of the discussion were vendors’ concerns around access to capital, adequate trading space, stalls, paved passages and lights within market premises.

On the issue of trading space, Chakwera said his administration was already engaging all stakeholders to see to it that Mzuzu vendors get modern facilities for their daily endeavours.

The President has reiterated his assurances on business financing, similar from meetings of this nature in Blantyre and Lilongwe, that initiatives such as the National Empowerment Economic Fund (NEEF) are convenient means of business transformation for vendors.

Communities challenged to demand information access on NEEF loans

Tilitonse Foundation has challenged communities in the area of Traditional Authority Tambala in Dedza to demand access to right information on issues surrounding the administration of the National Economic Empowerment Fund (NEEF) loans.

The organisation’s Chief Executive Officer Robert White made the call on the sidelines of a review meeting of a year long project dubbed Enhancing transparency and accountability on NEEF loan scheme which the foundation is funding Youth Initiative for Community Development (YICOD) to implement in the two Traditional Authorities, (T.As) Tambala and Kachere in the district.

White observed that despite the project bearing fruits, communities in the district are failing to demand answers on why some processes of the loan administration are delaying.

“People need to build confidence and realise that they have the responsibility to be provided with the necessary information regarding the social service that NEEF is providing to the citizens of the area so that they should be fully aware of how the process conducted,” said White.

He added on the need for ctizens to knock on the doors of service providers so that they should be providing the services as required.

Tambala Area Development Committee Chairperson Esinta Benjala attributed the problem to fear by communities to voice out their concerns.

“As leaders of community development structures, we will ensure that we are sourcing people’s views so that they should be chanelled to relevant authorities for action,” Benjala said.

Since the commencement of the project earlier this year, 24 women and youth groups and members of the business community have accessed the NEF loans in T/A Tambala in the district.
