Two Nkhotakota men convicted for grievous harm and arson

NKHOTAKOTA-(MaraviPost)-On Friday, Nkhunga First Grade Magistrate court in the central district of Nkhotakota convicted two men for setting a kitchen on fire before they grievously damaged the owner’s her leg with a concrete slab.

Nkhunga Police station deputy spokesperson Precious Makuta, identified the convicts as Chikondi Chintembo, 23, and Levinson Malawira aged 22 who committed the crime contrary to Section 238 of Penal Code.

March 22, 2017, the two are said on to have gone to the house of 52-Year old Adija Ayasi from Nkhondowe village in the district, who was married to the convicts’ grandfather and committed the crime.

Makuta told The Maravi Post that the victim had misunderstandings between the grandfather and the convicts, Chintembo and Malawira until the tension got out of hand.

The police publicist said the duo eventually got angry, and they decided to deal with the victim the time their grandfather was not at home.

“The convicts smashed the victim with the concrete slab in the face after they put her down and  later pushed the slab away as a result it hit her leg which became fractured. The magistrate was shown the ex-ray picture of a fractured bone of the victim, who was referred to the hospital for treatment.

“Eventually First Grade Magistrate Kingsley Buleya convicted and ordered the two to pay a fine of MK60, 000 each for the offence of grievous harm and MK50, 000 each, or in default face 36 months imprisonment with hard labour for the offence of arson,” Makuta said.

The police are therefore advising the general public that we should think before we act to avoid committing offences.

Police in Nkhotakota are keeping in custody, two suspects identified as Hassan Kamala and Kumbukani Chunga for burglary and theft.

 According to Nkhotakota police spokesperson Paul Maliwe, the two broke into a dwelling house of Miss Chisomo Ndalo on 5 March, 2017.

 He said the suspects who were four in number, managed to steal one expand bag which was filled with assorted clothes, two blankets, and one supersonic DVD player, all valued K 150,800. 00.

The two were identified by the owner of the house. The matter was reported at Nkhotakota police station and police arrested the two suspects on the same date afternoon.

 The suspects will appear before Nkhotakota First Grade Magistrate court to answer charges of burglary and theft which are against section 309 of the penal code.

 The two suspects come from Kamange village in the area of senior chief Malengachanzi in Nkhotakota.

A 23 year-old man Thokozani Mkali is battling for his life at Nkhotakota district hospital after being stabbed by eight sex workers in the district on Tuesday.

Confirming the development, Nkhotakota police spokesperson Paul Maliwe said the incident occurred around in the evening hours at a drinking joint when the victim planned to sleep with a certain sex worker,  leaving the 8 former ones he usually consorts. .

According to Maliwe, the development angered the eight sex workers who started beating and stabbing the victim.

“The victim was overpowered by the women and he sustained deep cuts on the head among other parts,” said Maliwe.

Maliwe  identified the suspects as a 20-year old Asiyatu Anusa, Rose Banda, 26, Mary Sinzumwa, 22, Linda Miting’I, 26, Martha Banda, 27, Rose Maseko, 30, Jane Kaunda, 24, and 28 years old Mariam Mwahimba.

The eight women were arrested after the matter was reported at Nkhotakota police and were charged with grievous harm contrary to section 278 of the penal code.

They eight will appear before Nkhotakota First Grade Magistrate court soon.

Thokozani Mkali (the victim) hails from Kamtanga village in the area of senior chief Malengachanzi in Nkhotakota.

Human placenta hunter jailed in Nkhotakota

A 29-year old Madalitso Kalamula in Nkhotakota has been sentenced to jail for three months after being found guilty of looking for a human placenta at the district hospital.

 Nkhotakota Magistrate Court heard that on the night of January 5, 2017 Kalamula was seen wandering at the maternity wing corridor of the district hospital by the nurses.

After being suspicious of him, the nurses alerted the watchmen who took Kalamula to Nkhotakota police station.

The court also heard that Kalamula confessed that he was looking for a human placenta.

 “My Lord, the suspect said that the placenta was for making medicine to cure his disease as advised by a herbalist,” said the police prosecutor, Assistant Superintendent Lungu.

 Presiding over the case, magistrate Fred Juma Chilowetsa found Kalamula guilty and gave him three months imprisonment with hard labor (IHL).

 Kalamula hails from Nkhunje village in the area of senior chief Mwadzama in Nkhotakota.
