Ntcheu man arrested for cutting off woman’s hand over marry proposal denial

BLANTYRE-(MaraviPost)-Malawi Police at Lizulu in Ntcheu are keeping in custody a 26-year-old for allegedly cutting off a woman’s hand, after she blocked his proposal for him to marry her 19-year-old secondary-school-going daughter.

Ntcheu Police Spokesperson Rabecca Ndiwate identified the suspect as Naison Kamwendo who committed the offence on Thursday, April 20, 2023 after hearing that the girl—whose mother Charity Chailosi says never wanted to get married.

The victim told the suspect that she wanted to concentrate on school.

The development which did not go well with the suspect.

Kamwendo committed the crime when the victim had gone to school within the area of Traditional Authority Masasa (T.A) in the district.

Ndiwate says Kamwendo went to Chailosi’s house with a panga knife where he cut off her left hand, completely removing it in the process.

“Well-wishers rescued Chailosi and called Police who took her to Masasa Health Centre. She was later referred to Dedza District Hospital where she is receiving treatment,” she said.

Officers from Lizulu Police Unit later arrested Kamwendo who has since appeared before court on Friday afternoon, April 21 on charges of grievous harm.

Malawian lady dies in road accident day after graduating with distinction

Isha Senga, a student who graduated with distinction at the Malawi University of Science and Technology (MUST) on Tuesday, has died in a road accident in Ntcheu.

According to a report from Ntcheu Police Station, the accident, which occurred at around 13:20 local time,  involved a motor vehicle, Toyota Atezza saloon, registration number BY 8379.

Facts of the incident are that the driver of the vehicle, a Mr Tarcizio Nkhoma, 28, was driving from the Balaka direction heading Ntcheu with three passengers on board. Upon arrival at the said area, he failed to negotiate a right bend due to speed and swerved to the extreme dirty verge where the vehicle overturned.

Due to the impact, the deceased sustained severe head injuries and was pronounced dead soon after arrival at Ntcheu District Hospital, while two passengers and the driver escaped with injuries of various degrees and were also admitted at the same hospital. The motor vehicle was irreparably damaged.

Senga was one of the fresh  graduates who have just completed their tertiary education at Malawi University of Science and Technology (MUST) which President Lazarus Chakwera graced.

She passed on at the age of 26 and was hailing from Chiradzulu District.

Malawian man behind bars for stabbing wife’s secret lover to death

BLANTYRE-(MaraviPost)—Police  in Ntcheu are keeping in custody a 44 year-old man for allegedly stabbing to death his wife’s secret lover.  

Ntcheu police spokesperson, Sub Inspector Hastings Chigalu said the suspect, Gabriel Yonas, spends much of his time in Blantyre where he works for a cleaning services company while his wife stays at Masunda 1 village, Sub Traditional Authority (STA) Tsikulamowa in Ntcheu.

“On July 24, the suspect left Blantyre for Ntcheu to visit his family. The suspect found it strange to find his wife with another man right in his own house at around 2100 hours. He resorted to stabbing Jason Dziko aged 42, on the chest with a knife, and fled the scene,” he said.

Chigalu said well-wishers rushed the deceased to Balaka District Hospital where he died while receiving medical attention.

Yonasi has been charged with murder which is contrary to section 209 of the Penal Code.

The deceased, Jason Dziko, hailed from Masunda 1 Village, STA Tsikulamowa in the district while the suspect hails from Msikita village, T/A Njema in Mulanje district.

The police biannual report is showing an increase in murder cases in Ntcheu with 16 cases registered from January to June this year compared to 11 registered in the same period in 2019.

Evil: Malawian being hunted for defiling biological daughter

Ntcheu, March 30, 2020:Police in Ntcheu are looking for George Gwalidi for allegedly defiling his 16 year’s old biological daughter.

Ntcheu Police Public Relations Officer (PRO), Hastings Chigalu told Malawi News Agency (Mana) Sunday that the suspect defiled his own daughter while his wife was temporarily away.

“The suspect grabbed the girl by the hand to his bedroom where he wrapped and sealed her mouth using seal tape before defiling and strongly warning her not to tell anyone or else he would kill her, but the girl defied the warning and told her mother,” he explained.

Surprisingly, the mother slapped the girl and commanded her to shut her mouth before chasing her out of the house,” Chigalu said in disbelief.

The PRO said the girl was unstoppable with the threats from her parents and went ahead and told her grandmother who reported the matter to the Police.

Medical report from Ntcheu District Hospital confirmed that the girl was indeed defiled.

Ntcheu Police has recently reported a sharp rise in cases of defilement and incest, this incident has happened barely few days after the Senior Resident Magistrates Court in Ntcheu had sentenced a 40 years old man to 18 years imprisonment with hard labour (IHL) for defiling his 12 years old biological daughter.

Gwalidi is at large and hails from Gumbu Village, Traditional Authority (TA) Kwataine in Ntcheu district.

Angry mob demolish Burundians’ shops in Ntcheu; one civilian survives gun shot

The communities around Lizulu market in Ntcheu, on Sunday morning demolished shops belonging to Burundian nationals, police have confirmed.

Ntcheu police spokesperson Hastings Chigalu, said the incidence occurred after the communities suspected that the Burundians were responsible for the death of a certain woman on Saturday. According to police, the community then decided to chase the Burundians out of the area.

“They started demolishing all the shops that belong to Burundians, and …… a number of shops have been affected,” said Chigalu.

The police spokesperson said the fracas also spread to the neighboring Mozambique.

However, Chigalu said both the Mozambican and Malawian police managed to calm the situation.

“Everything is in order now as we managed to settle down the situation,” he added.

When asked if it is true that a police officer shot one of the civilians, Chigalu said “it was the Mozambican police who fired the shot, and as of now the victim is admitted at Dedza hospital.”

However, no arrests have been made in the incident.
