Martha Chizuma the “Chief Crime Buster” obtained office by dubious means

At the Beginning of May 2021, Malawi leader Lazarus Chakwera wearing a matching grey Suit with Martha Chizuma appointed her to be the first female ACB director general.

Chakwera dared to fire Martha Chizuma

Many Malawians who had pure disdain for the previous regime led by the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) were thrilled as it was assumed that Martha who gained high praise as an Ombudsman  would go after the enemies of Lazarus Chakwera that included many members of the DPP. This belief was also held by Lazarus Chakwera and that is why many including the President himself were shocked when  Public Appointments Committee (PAC) of Parliament would stand in her way when Chakwera submitted Martha’s name to the committee as his choice for the job.

At that time supporters of Martha believed the Parliamentary Public Appointments Committee (PAC) had courted unnecessary controversy following their decision to reject the appointment of Ombudsman Martha Chizuma as the new Director General (DG) of the Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB).

Convinced that their man or in this case woman was wrongly rejected, many then including President Lazarus Chakwera were ready to put her into office by any means necessary. This would include illegal means which they did by forcing PAC to take another bite at the Apple. Now that many are souring on Martha it is believed some PAC members were paid to change their decisions.

Chizuma and her social media friend Onjezani Kenani

That day Chizuma appeared before the Committee where nine members voted for her while the other nine voted against her appointment a normal circumstance, PAC comprises twenty-one members, including the chairperson.

“Those who voted against Chizuma gave her a one out of 25.” (“Controversy as PAC rejects the appointment of ‘Iron Lady Martha Chizuma …”)  The Tonse Alliance members of the Committee suspected that her rejection was a calculated move by the opposition members of the Committee to block her appointment, Knowing Lazarus Chakwera was going to use her to  after some of them once she was given the job as some of the MPs were answering corruption charges. Of course, they were right.

Voice of America in a glaring headline wrote “Uproar Forces Malawi Parliament to Confirm Anti-Corruption Chief“, the post continued to say,

Malawi lawmakers have taken a sudden U-turn and confirmed Martha Chizuma as the first woman to head the country’s anti-corruption bureau or ACB. Lawmakers had rejected Chizuma for the post last week, raising accusations that the opposition scuttled the process for fear of being prosecuted for corruption during their time in power.

Seventeen lawmakers on the Parliamentary Appointments Committee attended a special meeting Monday to review last week’s rejection of Martha Chizuma.

Thirteen lawmakers participated in voting, while four from the opposition Democratic Progressive Party walked out in protest of the new voting procedure.

Chizuma was then elected to lead the ACB with twelve in favor and one abstention. (“Uproar Forces Malawi Parliament to Confirm Anti-Corruption Chief”)

Humphrey Mvula, a social and political commentator based in Blantyre, said the boycott of opposition lawmakers confirmed public views correctly that Chizuma’s rejection  was a calculated move to frustrate the fight against corruption.

Following many arrests of the opposition upon being appointed, Martha Chizuma has failed to get any convictions in court and decided to then turn on the MCP and many members of the “Tonse Alliance” to the disappointment of many in the ruling party. Many who pushed her nomination through illegally are now doing most of the complaining about her failures.

If Martha had any integrity, then and now she should have withdrawn her nomination. However, do not lose any sleep she never was qualified for this job. DPP knew it. Lazarus Chakwera was hoping for  a puppet. The only good thing to have come out of this is Martha’s incompetence has been revealed for all to see

Malawi Media challenged not to cover up on the jailing of Thom Chiumia

Thom Chiumia
Thom Chiumia, has stepped down following Allegations of Rape

Lilongwe, MaraviPost: On December 3rd, 2017 Malawi24.com wrote a story titled “Malawi media silence on Nyasatimes boss’ rape faulted” following the arrest  of the same Chiumia accused of then  raping a 17-year-old girl who was babysitting his two kids at his house. Chiumia  was later arrested by police and released on bail pending trial. This narrative on the silence of the Malawi Media was pushed by renowned activist Ben Chiza Mkandawire.

The Maravi Post and media houses were taken by surprise with these accusations of cover up as we posted the story with full details and also spoke to the Mother of the victim and promised her that we would follow the facts wherever they would lead.

Even Nyasatimes carried  the following Nyasa Times editor Thom Chiumia who is being accused of rape has left his post at the publication. Chiumia who is on police bail was arrested a week ago in the United Kingdom for raping a 17-year-old girl.

Fast forward, Justice has finally happened and Chiumia was on Wednesday, April 21st, 2021 had his bail revoked after being found guilty of the rape and has been jailed for 10 years as reported once again by the Maravi Post.

However, all this reporting appears not to satisfy some quarters of the Malawi Public. One such skeptical is Thandie Wa Pulimuheya who shared her doubts on her Facebook page and also on the Maravi Post WhatsApp group stating the following:

In 2017 Mr Chiumia  was arrested on suspicion of raping a young woman in the UK.  This was a man who made his name by “ reporting” on issues of interest to the public, particularly public figures. He was a man who politicians and other people of note were terrified of because of what he could reveal about them. Strangely, the man who made a living out of exposing scandals of other men, was accorded the strictest of  confidence, and treated like royalty. The entire journalist fraternity chose to keep mum and preserve his image. We even got screen shots from their WhatsApp group saying they do not “betray their own”.

I approached journalists from all major media houses, both male and female ones, they all flatly refused to report that this man had been arrested on suspicion of rape. But we are “bush journalists”, so we were not fazed. We  went to the women lawyers  association and together with concerned women in the UK we  started commenting and reporting on their Fb site. They issued a statement. We also went to Nyasatimes and bombarded each article they made with this story. Of note was a private story they reported about someone in the US, while refusing to report on this. So, we kept reminding them of the rot in their back yard until it was clear that Nyasatimes had to stop ignoring a reportable story from their own ranks while reporting on other people’s lives. He resigned.

It took 4 years to come through but come through it did.  So today the entire journalism community must be hanging their heads in shame. Both male and female must reflect on their role in offering refuge to a suspected rapist. We have seen them report on so many inaccurate stories without due care and destroying people’s lives in the process, but they would stop at nothing to protect this rot. They chose to stand with the rapist instead of the victim. We the bush journalists told the story anyway. These days no one owns all the means of communication.

Today the official journalists can continue to stand by their man. We the bush journalists are here to tell them that he got jailed for 10 years. After this sentence he is likely to be deported. Even if he does not get deported life as a sexual offender is almost impossible in the UK. You have to be registered a sex offender for life and you have to declare the offence afterwards to almost each time you want a job and other key services. No one will employ you.

This ladies and gentlemen were a successful, influential, decent looking, married, father, dare I say a preacher at some church, who had everything going for him. He blew it away. Some of you might choose to sympathise with what will become of him and his family some of us sympathise with the lifelong impact of his actions on  his victim and her family. Criminals belong in jail.

Huge praise to the victim for standing out and  never giving in to the pressure.

Why the Silence on Thom Chiumia?

BY Nicholas Walsh

The recent rape allegation against a Mr Thom Chiumia of Nyasatimes has left me baffled and pretty miffed. This guy has made a living by exposing other people’s misdemeanors and might I add, rightly so; coz that’s his job. He’s a reporter and probably a good one. But he is accused of allegedly raping a 14 year old young girl. This is a serious offence. I’m not here to discuss about whether the legitimacy of the allegation or whether he is guilty or not. That’s the job of the authorities. Continue reading Why the Silence on Thom Chiumia?

Peter Mutharika proves he is going to be different by suing Ntata other than arresting him on bogus charges

Malawi President Peter Mutharika
President Peter Mutharika (R) to name Karonga Chitipa road for his fallen brother, Bingu

Malawi President Peter Mutharika is proving once again that he means what he says, when he promises openness and freedom of press in Malawi. As has been done in the Past with other Presidents, Allan Ntata would have been arrested on bogus charges.

Joyce Banda arrested Justice Mponda a Malawi voice reporter for writing unfavorable stories on the President and how her Family benefited from cashgate. Justice Mponda was eventually exonerated by a Malawi Court and compensated for false arrest.
