TMZ’s Harvey Levin Details Contents of Alleged Nancy Guthrie Ransom Note

TMZ founder Harvey Levin shared details of an alleged ransom note pertaining to the disappearance of Savannah Guthrie’s mom, Nancy Guthrie.

Earlier this week, Levin, 75, received one of two reported ransom notes by email, which he said during a CNN interview on Thursday, February 5, he immediately forwarded to the Pima County Sheriff’s Department in Arizona, who passed it on to the FBI. (Tucson news outlet KOLD News 13 also said it received a ransom note.)

Following an FBI press conference earlier on Thursday, in which investigators confirmed two deadlines mentioned in the alleged ransom note, Levin gave more detail about the letter he received.

“There was a deadline at 5 o’clock today, and there is a change in — if this is a kidnapper — what the kidnapper may want,” Levin told CNN’s Erin Burnett, adding that a second deadline, set for Monday, February 9, “is far more consequential.”

Who Is Annie Guthrie? What to Know About Savannah Guthrie’s Sister

“It felt like somebody means business. When you read it, it’s very detailed,” he said.

According to Levin, the email began by describing Nancy, 84, as being “OK, but scared” and said the Today show cohost’s mom was “aware of the letter and the demands” made in it.

Levin also said that “the letter says you will have no way of contacting me — this is the only contact.”

“It specifically says there will be no further communication … no negotiation, no communication,” Levin said in another interview with CNN’s Anderson Cooper on Thursday.

Levin said there is a detail in the letter he received that has, as of now, gone unreported, which may give credence to its legitimacy.

During Thursday’s press conference, FBI Phoenix special agent in charge Heith Janke said the ransom note mentioned Nancy’s Apple Watch and a damaged floodlight on her property outside of Tucson.

According to Levin, the letter he received made mention of “the placement of the Apple Watch,” which he noted “has not come out” in the press as yet.

Levin further said that another part of the letter leads him to believe that the person behind the alleged ransom note may be near Tucson.

Savannah Guthrie’s Mom Nancy Is Missing in Arizona: Timeline of the Case

“I think there is a radius around Tucson that they kind of disclose in this demand letter,” he said.

Levin shared that TMZ’s I.T. team was unable to trace the email back to its source of origin.

“The letter says, ‘The police will be no help to you,’” he said.

Nancy, 84, was reported missing from her home near Tucson on Sunday, February 1. She was last seen on Saturday, January 31.

Savannah, 54, and her siblings, Annie and Camron Guthrie, pleaded for their mother’s safe return in an emotional Instagram video on Wednesday, February 4.

Everything to Know About the ‘Imposter’ Ransom Note in Nancy Guthrie Case

“As a family, we are doing everything that we can,” Savannah said. “We are ready to talk. However, we live in a world where voices and images are easily manipulated. We need to know without a doubt that she is alive and that you have her. We want to hear from you, and we are ready to listen. Please, reach out to us.”

Camron made a further appeal in an Instagram video shared by Savannah on Thursday just after the 5 p.m. deadline.

“Whoever is out there holding our mother, we want to hear from you. We haven’t heard anything directly,” he said. “We need you to reach out and we need a way to communicate with you so we can move forward. But first, we have to know if you have our mom. We want to talk to you and we are waiting for contact.”

The FBI confirmed on Thursday that it had made one arrest in connection with a hoax ransom demand separate from the ransom notes received by TMZ and KOLD News 13.

Savannah Guthrie’s Brother Sends Stern Message to Mom Nancy’s Abductor

Savannah Guthrie‘s brother, Camron Guthrie, has spoken out amid mom Nancy Guthrie’s continued disappearance.

“This is Camron Guthrie and I’m speaking for the Guthrie family,” Camron said in a video shared via Savannah’s Instagram page on Thursday, February 5. “Whoever it out there holding our mother, we want to hear from you. We haven’t heard anything directly. We need you to reach out and we need a way to communicate with you so we can move forward. But first, we have to know if you have our mom. We want to talk to you and we are waiting for contact.”

Nancy, 84, was reported missing earlier in February, with local Arizona law enforcement officers revealing she was last seen on January 31.

“On behalf of our family we want to thank all of you for the prayers for our beloved mom, Nancy,” Savannah, 54, said in a video with her siblings, Annie and Camron, shared via Instagram on February 4. “We feel them and we continue to believe that she feels them too. Our mom is a kind, faithful, loyal, fiercely loving woman of goodness and light. She is funny, spunky and clever.”

Savannah Guthrie’s Mom Nancy’s Search Mission Is a ‘Race Against Time’

The Today show host continued, “She has grandchildren who adore her and crowd around her and cover her with kisses. She loves fun and adventure. She is a devoted friend. She is full of kindness and knowledge.”

Savannah and her siblings subsequently acknowledged the $50,000 ransom reward in exchange for Nancy’s safe return.

“As a family, we are doing everything that we can. We are ready to talk. However, we live in a world where voices and images are easily manipulated,” Savannah said. “We need to know without a doubt that she is alive and that you have her. We want to hear from you, and we are ready to listen. Please, reach out to us.”

Savannah concluded the emotional video with a message to her mother.

“Mommy, if you are hearing this, you are a strong woman. You are God’s precious daughter, Nancy. We believe and know that even in this valley, He is with you,” Savannah stated. “Everyone is looking for you, Mommy, everywhere. We will not rest. Your children will not rest until we are together again. We speak to you every moment. And we pray without ceasing, and we rejoice in advance that the day that we hold you in our arms again. We love you, Mom.”

‘Today’ Anchors ‘Rattled’ and Shaken’ Over Disappearance of Savannah’s Mom

There are no current suspects in Nancy’s disappearance, though local police believe that she might have been kidnapped.

“Something unusual at that house occurred that made us go, ‘Wow, something’s wrong here. Something doesn’t fit,’” Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos exclusively told Us Weekly on February 2. “We’re gonna pull all the stops and go at all angles. We really do hope it’s a search-and-rescue mission and we find her and she’s safe and sound. But it would be unjust if we didn’t look at what’s in front of us and go, ‘We need to act.’”

Nanos added, “This is an 84-year-old lady who is safe in her own home asleep, and she is taken. And that should never happen.”

Earlier on Thursday, an arrest was made by the FBI for an “imposter ransom demand.”

“We have made one arrest related to an imposter ransom demand, and a complaint will be presented to a magistrate judge later today,” FBI Phoenix Special Agent in Charge Heith Janke said during a press conference. “You will get more on that from the FBI and our U.S. Attorney’s office here in Arizona when it becomes available.”

Janke also revealed in the press conference details about the alleged ransom note including a deadline.

“First, I think [it] was 5 p.m. today, and then it had a second deadline after that,” he said. “So we are continuing in a normal kidnapping case, there would be contact by now trying to discuss that. But those are the time frames we’re looking at as we move forward.”

FBI Says Initial Deadline for Ransom Note in Nancy Guthrie’s Abduction Is Today

In light of Nancy’s disappearance, Savannah has taken a hiatus from Today and her planned duties covering the 2026 Winter Olympics for NBC.

“On behalf of our family, I want to thank everyone for the thoughts, prayers, and messages of support,” Savannah said in a February 2 statement shared via Today. “Right now, our focus remains on the safe return of our dear mom. We thank law enforcement for their hard work on this case and encourage anyone with information to contact the Pima County Sheriff’s Department.”

Nancy shared Savannah, Annie and Camron with her late husband, Charles Guthrie, who died in 1988 after a heart attack. He was 49.

Chelsea Handler Mentions Charlie Kirk’s Turning Point USA at Critics Choice

Chelsea Handler made reference to Turning Point USA during her 2026 Critics Choice Awards wrap.

Handler, 50, concluded her hosting duties on Sunday, January 4, by rolling out a series of acknowledgements that included a nod to the nonprofit organization originally founded by the late Charlie Kirk and now run by his widow, Erika Kirk.

“We would like to thank the critics, the crew, the E! Network and Turning Point USA,” the comedian, who held a near-empty glass in her hand, said before flashing a wide grin. “Good night.”

Turning Point USA was created by the former political activist in 2012 to advocate for conservative politics throughout high school, college and university campuses. Erika, 37, took over as CEO and chairwoman of the company in September 2025, just days after Charlie was assassinated at the age of 31.

Charlie Kirk’s Widow Erika Named New Turning Point USA CEO After His Death

Last month, Erika engaged in a full week of TV appearances on Fox News as she promoted Charlie’s posthumous book, Stop, in the Name of God: Why Honoring the Sabbath Will Transform Your Life. More recently, Erika also appeared at Turning Point USA’s AmericaFest 2026 in Phoenix, Arizona, where she brought surprise guest Nicki Minaj onto the stage for a sit down interview on December 21, 2025.

During Sunday’s Critics Choice Awards, Handler, who has publicly voiced her political viewpoints for many years, also poked fun at Minaj, 43, in light of the musician’s AmericaFest 2026 appearance. Handler said during her opening monologue jab that she hadn’t “been invited to a Black person’s house since [the film] Sinners,” before noting that the “only person who has invited me is Nicki Minaj, but who wants to go over there?”

Turning Point USA has been in the spotlight considerably in the wake of Charlie’s death at Utah Valley University in Orem, Utah, on September 10, 2025. Much of the attention can be attributed to Erika’s public appearances.

As Erika continues to mourn her late husband, she has offered public glimpses into how her family is coping without Charlie, including the fact that her 3-year-old daughter “can’t wait” to go to heaven. Erika said during a December 8 appearance on Fox News’ Hannity that she and her daughter have discussed where they believe Charlie rests today. (Erika shared two children with Charlie: a daughter, born in 2022, and a son, born in 2024. Their names have never been publicly confirmed.)

“We’ve come to the understanding, and I’ve tried to explain this to her, that Daddy’s still with us, he’s just in a different location and he’s building us a home in heaven,” Erika said on the show. “And I’ve said this before, but she said, ‘I can’t wait to go.’ I said, “Me too, baby.’”

During a December 13 town hall on CBS News, Erika also detailed her significant struggles in the days that followed Charlie’s death. “It took me months to even walk into my bedroom,” Erika detailed before revealing she was sleeping in her daughter’s bed instead. “I can’t sleep, I’m on my phone, and I start typing out [a speech].”

‘Sister Wives’ Preview: Kody Admits He Wasn’t ‘Fair’ to Robyn Amid Splits

Kody Brown has a heart-to-heart with wife Robyn Brown on the latest episode of Sister Wives, confessing he might’ve neglected her amid his three failed marriages.

“I need to stop with the self deprecation. Regarding you and me,” Kody, 56, tells Robyn, 47, in Us Weekly’s exclusive sneak peek of the Sunday, January 4, episode after finishing his ex-wives apology tour.

“The only thing that I’ve kind of pulled away from is when you’re emotionally unsafe,” Robyn responds, seemingly on board with Kody’s new approach to their marriage. “That’s it.”

Kody notes that “some of the things I’ve done recently may help” him being more present with Robyn, referring to his meetings with exes Meri Brown, Janelle Brown and Christine Brown following their respective splits.

Sister Wives Preview Kody Confesses to Owing Robyn an Apology Most of All for Remaining Loyal

After taking a pause, Kody turns to Robyn and really sees her. “Thanks for being loyal,” he says in an emotional moment between the couple.

“Well, you deserve it. You’ve earned it from me, honey. I’m right here,” Robyn reassures her spouse, whom she legally wed in 2014 after spiritually tying the knot four years prior.

Kody acknowledges that Robyn has always had his back, realizing almost in that moment that he never told her how much that meant while he was struggling with his breakups.

Sister Wives’ Kody Wonders If His Value to Robyn Was ‘Diminished’ After Splits

“It hasn’t been very fair. I haven’t been very fair with you,” he confesses. “I’ve been apologizing to everybody. In spite of all how brutal they were. I was apologizing to them.”

Kody admits, “But you were never brutal. You’re never unkind. You’re never disloyal. I’ve been apologizing to everybody. I think I owe you an apology most of all.”

As Robyn takes in Kody’s heartfelt apology, he continues to process his recent actions in a confessional interview.

‘Sister Wives’ Preview: Kody Asks Robyn to ‘Accept’ Him as a Monogamist

“Holy cow, I’ve apologized to everybody but you,” he tells the cameras of Robyn, calling her “the woman who has been so supportive through all of my BS, all of my weakness, all of my anger, all of my ranting and raving and complaining.”

As Sister Wives fans have learned in recent years, Kody’s plural family began falling apart one wife at a time starting in 2021.

His third wife, Christine, 53, announced in November 2021 that she and Kody had called it quits after more than 25 years together. Her choice to leave him and the greater polygamist family started a ripple effect.

His second wife Janelle, 56, followed suit, announcing her separation from Kody in December 2022 after nearly 30 years of marriage.

Kody’s first wife, Meri — whom he was legally married to from 1990 to 2014 and then remained spiritually married to for nearly another decade — confirmed in January 2023 that she and Kody had also parted ways.

With each split, Kody grew a little more distant with his remaining wife Robyn, but she remained committed to him and their life — even if it was now a monogamous one.

During season 20 of Sister Wives, Kody traveled to see all of his exes to apologize for how they ended things and the negative remarks he made about them during that dark time. Upon his return to Arizona, where he and Robyn live, he tells the cameras that he’s found a bit of peace.

Sister Wives’ Christine Brown Confirms She and Ex Kody Are Distant Cousins

“I almost want to say, like, a phoenix metaphor,” Kody says of his journey in Us’ preview of this week’s episode. “This life that we had before has been kind of burned down. I’m like [not] burning it all down so that I forget it. I want to remember it and cherish it and move forward with the lessons that I learned from it in a relationship that is very beautiful, very safe, very whole.”

Robyn, meanwhile, tells the cameras she’s happy with the positive changes she’s seen in Kody since he found closure.

“I think taking accountability for his part in the marriages falling apart I think was something that gave him some peace and help in his healing,” she says in the clip. “But then I also just see him just kind of taking a sigh of relief. Just like, ‘OK, I took accountability for my part.’”

Sister Wives airs on TLC Sundays at 10 p.m. ET.

Russell Brand Takes Aim at Ex Katy Perry’s Relationship With Justin Trudeau

Russell Brand is not a fan of his ex-wife Katy Perry striking up a romance with former Canadian prime minister Justin Trudeau.

Speaking at a Turning Point USA event in Phoenix on Thursday, December 18, Brand, 50, took a swipe at his ex’s current partner.

“Look, Katy Perry, I was married to her. I love her still, and I’m glad that her mom’s in the room to hear me say this, but look,” he said. “I was okay with Orlando Bloom, but Justin Trudeau? Come on, man! Don’t put me in a category with that guy! That globalist stooge.”

Despite not being a fan of Trudeau, 53, Brand had a much more positive assessment of Perry’s parents, noting they were in the audience at the event.

“My ex-wife’s parents are here. They’re Christians and I love them. I love Mary Perry,” Brand said on stage. “God bless you, thank you for bringing the message to me.”

Katy Perry ‘Likes’ Post Spoofing Her Romance With Justin Trudeau

Brand and Perry, 41, were married from 2010 to late 2011, with the “Roar” singer learning her marriage was over via text message while on tour.

Perry addressed the split in an interview with Vogue in June 2013, telling the outlet at the time, “He’s a very smart man, and I was in love with him when I married him. [But] let’s just say I haven’t heard from him since he texted me saying he was divorcing me December 31, 2011.”

Earlier this year, the Forgetting Sarah Marshall star spoke about their marriage breakdown during an episode of his podcast, “Stay Free with Russell Brand”

“What can I tell you is, when I was married to Katy Perry, she’s like, not entirely normal, because she’s an extraordinary, massive star — but she’s not weird or off key,” Brand said on the podcast in April. “And wasn’t involved in anything nefarious, as far as I could tell.”

He added, “The reasons that a marriage didn’t work are the normal human reasons [why] marriages don’t work, and I have nothing but respect for her.”

Following her break up with Brand, Perry later moved on with Bloom, 48, with whom she shares five-year-old daughter Daisy. Meanwhile, Brand married Laura Gallacher in 2017.

Bloom and Perry ultimately went their separate ways earlier this year, with news of their split after a decade together making headlines in June.

The “Firework” singer was then linked to Trudeau over the summer before confirming their romance by going “Instagram official” in December.

While visiting Japan for her Lifetime Tour, the singer posted a series of photos via her Instagram on December 6, which showed her enjoying her downtime with the politician.

“Tokyo times on tour and more,” she captioned the carousel of images and videos, which included a photo of the pair cozying up for a selfie. Another clip showed the pair enjoying a sushi dinner date together.

The couple were also photographed together during a meeting with former Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida. The photo was posted via Instagram on December 4, marking the duo’s public debut.

“Former Canadian Prime Minister Trudeau came to Japan with his partner Katy Perry and had lunch with us,” Kishida, 68, wrote via Instagram on December 4. “During my time as Prime Minister, I met Prime Ministers many times, and when I visited Canada, we worked together to strengthen bilateral relations, including formulating the ‘Nikka Action Plan.’ I am glad that we are continuing this friendship.”

He continued, “Canada is an extremely important partner to Japan in all areas of politics, security, economics, culture, etc. We will continue to work hard for friendship and cooperation between Japan and Canada.”

Rodney Rogers Dead at 54: NBA Star Remembered for ‘Towering Legacy’

Former NBA star Rodney Rogers has died at age 54.

A news release from his college alma mater, Wake Forest, confirmed that Rogers died on Friday, November 21, of natural causes linked to a 2008 spinal injury. He is survived by his wife, Faye Rogers, and three children: daughters Roddreka and Rydeiah as well as son Rodney Rogers II. (Roddreka is currently an assistant coach for Georgia State women’s basketball, while Rydeiah played basketball at North Carolina State from 2015 to 2019.)

Rogers became paralyzed from the shoulders down following a November 2008 ATV crash near Raleigh, North Carolina, when he accidentally drove into a ditch and flipped over the handlebars.

“Rodney Rogers, an NBA legend who played 12 years in the league, passed away on November 21, 2025, from natural causes related to the spinal cord injury he sustained on November 28, 2008,” his family said in a statement released by Wake Forest. “He made his transition peacefully, surrounded by the endless love of his devoted wife, Faye.”

The Most Shocking Celebrity Deaths of All Time: Diane Keaton and More

Their tribute continued, “A native of Durham, N.C., Rogers leaves behind a towering legacy as one of the most transformative players in program history and an enduring example of courage, generosity, and Pro Humanitate spirit.”

He joined the Wake Forest University basketball team in 1990 and eventually was named the Atlantic Coast Conference Player of the Year and a First-Team All-American in his final season.

“Rodney Rogers transformed and accelerated the upward trajectory of Wake Forest University as well as Demon Deacons basketball from the moment he signed his letter of intent in the fall of 1989,” Wake Forest’s former athletic director, John Currie, said. “His generational combination of power and grace as a player was exceeded only by the size of his heart. His perseverance and spirit following his accident inspired thousands and embodied the true meaning of Pro Humanitate. Rodney showed us what strength looks like in every chapter of life. Our hearts are with Faye, Roddreka, Rodney II, Rydiah and the entire Rogers family.”

He was drafted as the ninth overall pick by the Denver Nuggets when he turned pro in 1993 and would go on to play for several NBA teams, including a four-year stint for the Los Angeles Clippers. Rogers won the prestigious Sixth Man of the Year Award in 2000 while he was playing for the Phoenix Suns.

In later years, Rogers played for the New Jersey Nets, the New Orleans Hornets and, finally, for the Philadelphia 76ers before leaving the league in 2005.

The NBA released a statement on Saturday, November 22, to recognize Rogers’s unforgettable contributions to the sport of basketball.

“The NBA family is deeply saddened by the passing of Rodney Rogers. Rodney earned the Sixth Man of the Year Award while playing for the Phoenix Suns and was a beloved teammate during his 12-year NBA career,” an NBA statement read. “He will be remembered not only for his achievements on the court but also for the extraordinary resilience, courage and generosity that he demonstrated throughout his life — qualities that inspired so many. We send our heartfelt condolences to Rodney’s wife, Faye, and their family.”

NBA Commissioner Adam Silver Makes 1st Comments After Gambling Indictments

Former Wake Forest coach Dave Odom remembered Rogers as an “extraordinary talent” who was “every bit as remarkable as a human being.”

“He loved his teammates, he loved his family, he loved Wake Forest and he loved the game of basketball,” Odom recalled. “Every time we visited him, I walked away reminding myself never to complain — because he never did,.”

Odom went on, “He faced life exactly as it came and made the very best of every moment. He was a joy to watch as a basketball player, but he was an even greater man. He shared his strength, his spirit and his life with everyone around him.”

NBA Star Chris Paul’s Wife Jada Posts Congratulatory Message After Retirement

Chris Paul’s wife, Jada, has been by his side since the start of his basketball career — and now she gets to see how it ends.

After the NBA star teased his retirement from basketball on Saturday, November 21, tying the bow on an illustrious 21-year career, Jada was quick to post a congratulatory message for her high school sweetheart.

Jada, a fashion designer and entrepreneur, reposted Chris’s retirement announcement video on her Instagram story, posting a supportive message along with it.

“Helluva career! Helluva ride! So proud of you,” Jada posted via her Instagram story.

NBA’s Chris Paul and Jada Crawley’s Complete Relationship Timeline

Jada and Chris met when Chris was a junior in high school and Jada was a senior.

Jada explained in a 2014 interview with xoNecole that a mutual friend set them up. The two finished high school and went to Wake Forest University together before Chris was drafted into the NBA in 2005 after his sophomore year of college.

“We met in high school. I’m a year older than him, so in high school it wasn’t cool to be a senior dating a junior,” Jada said in an interview with xoNecole in 2014.

The couple stayed together throughout college and tied the knot in September 2011 in North Carolina. Chris was already in the seventh year of his NBA career at that time.

Other NBA stars attended the wedding as well, including LeBron James and Dwayne Wade. Comedian Kevin Hart was also at the star-studded ceremony.

“Our relationship has been a progression,” Jada told Essence magazine at the time. “I feel safe with Chris. He’s very protective.”

Chris and Jada share two kids together: Chris Jr., 16, and Camryn, 13.

They co-founded the CP3 Foundation in 2005 in partnership with The Winston-Salem Foundation with the goal of making a positive impact “by focusing on education, health & wellness, and leadership. The foundation provides resources that enrich and strengthen the healthy development of strong communities.”

Chris has been very supportive of his wife throughout the years, sharing with People in a 2022 interview that praising the women in his life is very important to him.

“I think that’s why I’m blessed to have the strong mother I was raised by, but then also have an amazing wife and have the opportunity to raise two amazing kids,” he said.

Soon after he was drafted in the first round of the 2005 NBA Draft, Chris made his presence felt in the league. He earned the Rookie of the Year Award after his first season with the New Orleans Hornets (now Pelicans).

He was traded to the Houston Rockets in 2017, then to the Oklahoma City Thunder in 2019. In 2020, he joined the Phoenix Suns.

The 12-time NBA All Star bounced around to a few teams in recent years, signing back with the Clippers over the summer where he will finish his career.

Often regarded as one of the greatest point cards of all time, he led the NBA in assists five times in his career and led the league in steals a record six times. He also earned two Olympic gold medals with Team USA.

I Watched Prime Video’s New No. 1 Thriller That’s Better Than ‘The White Lotus’

From The White Lotus to Patricia Highsmith‘s Ripley books, I can’t get enough of rich people being made to suffer.

Prime Video’s newest show, Malice, is right up that same alley. It stars Jack Whitehall as a young man who ingratiates himself with a wealthy family for nefarious purposes.

It’s a delightful and dramatic slice of soap opera thriller, and Watch With Us thinks it should be your next binge-watch.

Here’s why I think Malice is better than The White Lotus and most “rich people are bad” mystery shows streaming right now.

5 Most Anticipated Prime Video Movies and Shows of Fall 2025, Ranked

It’s a Little Bit Like ‘Saltburn’ and ‘The White Lotus’ — Only Better

If the past few years are any indication, pop culture content that depicts awful rich people getting their just desserts is what the people want to see — let’s not think too hard about why that is. At any rate, Malice follows Jack Whitehall’s Adam, a tutor who worms his way into being a male nanny (or “manny”) for the much wealthier Tanner family.

The Tanners are led by businessman Jamie (David Duchovny), who is not the best dad to his kids, Dexter (Phoenix Laroche), Kit (Harry Gilby) and April (Teddie Allen), although he still seems quite hot and heavy with wife Nat (Carice Van Houten). If you enjoyed movies like Saltburn or shows like Ripley and The White Lotus, there’s a lot here to enjoy. Gorgeous locales, a family with money-induced brain-rot and a suspicious little guy intent on getting revenge against them.

And yes, while The White Lotus is great, season 3 was a major letdown and left a bad taste in a lot of people’s mouths. Malice is even better than that season because it sets up an intriguing mystery and delivers on it. There’s no false red herrings, no obvious suspect and no loose narratives that lead to nowhere — instead, it tells a relatively straightforward revenge plot with an anti-hero you root for.

David Duchovny Plays a Jerk You Can’t Help But Like

One thing Watch With Us is gonna do is we’re gonna watch a show starring David Duchovny. Most people are familiar with Duchovny from his iconic role as Fox Mulder on The X-Files, but the guy is a fantastic actor, and funny too. He particularly excels at playing charming or impish a-holes but in a very nonchalant way, and Duchovny is in fine form, conveying this type of personality in Malice with plenty of wry humor.

Jamie Tanner is a dick, and yet it’s hard to hate him, partly because he is given some redeeming qualities. But a lot of that redemption can be chalked up to the way Duchovny plays him. Duchovny also does a great job at evoking the cruelty and carelessness of men who are so rich that petty irritations still manage to get the better of them, despite nearly all their problems otherwise being solved with their money.

It’s Fun to Watch Horrible Rich People Suffer

Harry Gilby, Teddie Allen, Clarice van Houten, David Duchovny in Malice

Watching a show like Malice can be incredibly cathartic, because while it’s so delightful to watch horrible people get what’s coming to them, it’s more fun when they’re wealthy. People who have a lot of money often feel like their wealth shields them from retribution for bad behavior, or even emboldens it — meanwhile, the rest of us, the lowly proletariat, just have to sit back and take the abuse.

Even though Adam’s motives are left unclear for much of the show, it’s entertaining to watch him spin webs, lay traps and just basically terrorize the horrible Tanner family (Jamie, in particular) in very quiet and calculated ways. He tosses Jamie’s passport into the ocean, poisons food and even flirts with Nat to try to disturb the sanctity of Jamie and Nat’s marriage. Malice combines audience fascination with luxurious lives and the nagging desire to see someone set it all on fire.

The Show Keeps Things Vague Until the Very End

From the jump, Adam is very calculated in his plan to gain the trust of the Tanner family, so we know that he is motivated by a grudge. At one point early on, Adam stands over Jamie, drunk on the ground, and says, “I could kill you right now if I wanted. But I’m not going to do that. Because I want you to suffer, just like I did.” For what reasons Adam suffered remains unspoken until closer to the season’s conclusion.

Now That ‘The White Lotus’ Season 3 Is Over, Watch These 5 Great Shows

Keeping Adam’s motivations unclear might frustrate some viewers, but it also allows for Malice to keep people hooked and guessing until the very end — when Adam’s plot is finally revealed in full. Why reveal all the cards so quickly? And at only six episodes, there’s not much waiting to do either. Malice is fantastically bingeable, and the reveal is well worth the wait.
