Business as usual is a death sentence for Los Angeles, and I’m done waiting for someone to take real action.”

Pratt continued, “That’s why I am running for mayor. And let me be clear, this just isn’t a campaign, this is a mission, and we’re gonna expose the system.”

JFK’s Niece Vows to Use ‘Pickax’ to Remove Trump’s Name From Kennedy Center

The Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C. is one step closer to being called the Trump-Kennedy Center.

On December 18, 2025, the White House confirmed the board of the Kennedy Center voted to rename the building that is in honor of President John F. Kennedy.

“I have just been informed that the highly respected Board of the Kennedy Center, some of the most successful people from all parts of the world, have just voted unanimously to rename the Kennedy Center to the Trump-Kennedy Center, because of the unbelievable work President Trump has done over the last year in saving the building,” White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt wrote via X at the time. “Not only from the standpoint of its reconstruction, but also financially, and its reputation. Congratulations to President Donald J. Trump, and likewise, congratulations to President Kennedy, because this will be a truly great team long into the future! The building will no doubt attain new levels of success and grandeur.”

Soon after the news broke, several Kennedy family members spoke out against the board’s decision.

Celebrities Call Out President Trump’s Comments About Rob Reiner’s Death

Maria Shriver questioned why Trump has been so interested in having his name be part of the cultural center.

“Next thing perhaps he will want to rename JFK Airport, rename the Lincoln Memorial, the Trump Lincoln Memorial. The Trump Jefferson Memorial. The Trump Smithsonian. The list goes on,” she wrote via Instagram. “Can we not see what is happening here? C’mon, my fellow Americans! Wake up! This is not dignified. This is not funny. This is way beneath the stature of the job. It’s downright weird. It’s obsessive in a weird way. Just when you think someone can’t stoop any lower, down they go…”

According to NBC News, Trump told reporters at the White House that he was “surprised” and “honored” by the board’s vote.

Keep reading to see how other Kennedy family members reacted to the news:

Jack Schlossberg

JFK’s only grandson vowed to fight back against the Kennedy Center’s new name.

“SEND ME TO CONGRESS TO SMOKE THESE FOOLS — MAKE YOUR VOICE HEARD LOUD AND CLEAR,” Schlossberg, who is running for New York’s 12th Congressional District, said via Instagram on December 18, 2025. “I won’t back down or be drowned out.”

Joe Kennedy III

After seeing Leavitt’s announcement about the Kennedy Center, JFK’s nephew decided to speak out on social media.

“The Kennedy Center is a living memorial to a fallen president and named for President Kennedy by federal law,” he wrote via X on December 18, 2025. “It can no sooner be renamed than can someone rename the Lincoln Memorial, no matter what anyone says.”

Maria Shriver

The journalist and niece of JFK expressed her disappointment at the Kennedy Center being renamed to the Trump-Kennedy Center.

“The Kennedy Center was named after my uncle, President John F Kennedy. It was named in his honor. He was a man who was interested in the arts, interested in culture, interested in education, language, history,” she wrote via Instagram on December 18, 2025. “He brought the arts into the White House, and he and my Aunt Jackie [Kennedy Onassis] amplified the arts, celebrated the arts, stood up for the arts and artists.”

Shriver continued, “It is beyond comprehension that this sitting president has sought to rename this great memorial dedicated to President Kennedy. It is beyond wild that he would think adding his name in front of President Kennedy’s name is acceptable. It is not.”

After workers installed Trump’s name to the Kennedy Center building, Shriver spoke out again.

“This will always be the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts,” she wrote via Instagram later that month. “A great man would have said to his hand picked board, ‘Thank you, but the building already has its name. Let it stand. Let it be. I don’t need that.’ But then again…”

Kerry Kennedy

“President Trump and his administration have spent the past year repressing free expression, targeting artists, journalists, and comedians and erasing the history of Americans whose contributions made our nation better and more just,” JFK’s niece Kerry wrote via X on December 18, 2025. “President Kennedy proudly stood for justice, peace, equality, dignity, diversity, and compassion for those who suffer. President Trump stands in opposition to these values, and his name should not be placed alongside President Kennedy’s.”

One day later, Kerry reacted to Trump’s name being installed on the building.

“Three years and one month from today, I’m going to grab a pickax and pull those letters off that building, but I’m going to need help holding the ladder,” she wrote via X. “Are you in? Applying for my carpenter’s card today, so it’ll be a union job!!!”

Donald Trump Attacks Jimmy Kimmel Again While Hosting Kennedy Center Honors

Tim Shriver

“Perhaps the board isn’t aware that the Kennedy Center is 𝗧𝗛𝗘 memorial to the president of the United States, John F. Kennedy.  Would they rename the Lincoln memorial? The Jefferson? That would be an insult to great presidents. This too is an insult to a great president,” JFK’s nephew Tim wrote via X in December 2025. “ Notwithstanding their short-sighted action, it is and will remain the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts.”

Maria Shriver Doubles Down on Donald Trump Criticism Over Kennedy Center

Maria Shriver is speaking out against the Kennedy Center’s new name once again.

Hours after workers added Donald Trump’s name to the Washington D.C. building, the niece of John F. Kennedy had some questions for the current president of the United States.

“Adding your name to a memorial already named in honor of a great man doesn’t make you a great man. Quite the contrary,” Shriver, 70, wrote via Instagram on Friday, December 19. “Putting your name on top of someone else’s doesn’t mean that people will speak of you in the same breath as the other man. Putting your name above another man’s name on his existing memorial… What is that about? Truly? What’s that about?”

The journalist and women’s health activist continued to list some questions she has for Trump after he pushed for his name to be part of the Kennedy Center.

JFK’s Niece Vows to Use ‘Pickax’ to Remove Trump’s Name From Kennedy Center

“Do you want people to speak the names as one? Dig down deep. What are you trying to say? I’m really interested,” Shriver continued. “There is no other president who would do this. None. Zero. In fact, it’s not even legal. Congress named the performing arts center as a living memorial in 1964, and only Congress can change that law.”

The White House confirmed on Thursday, December 18, that the board of the Kennedy Center voted to rename the Kennedy Center to the Trump – Kennedy Center.

“I have just been informed that the highly respected Board of the Kennedy Center, some of the most successful people from all parts of the world, have just voted unanimously to rename the Kennedy Center to the Trump-Kennedy Center, because of the unbelievable work President Trump has done over the last year in saving the building,” White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt wrote via X on Thursday. “Congratulations to President Donald J. Trump, and likewise, congratulations to President Kennedy, because this will be a truly great team long into the future! The building will no doubt attain new levels of success and grandeur.”

According to NBC News, Trump also told reporters on Thursday at the White House that he was “surprised” and “honored” by the board’s vote.

In her latest social media post, Shriver said the building will “always be the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts.”

“A great man would have said to his hand-picked board, ‘Thank you, but the building already has its name. Let it stand. Let it be. I don’t need that,’” she said. “But then again…”

Why Did Tom Cruise Reportedly Refuse Kennedy Center Honor? What to Know

Maria isn’t the only family member to have spoken out against the Kennedy Center being renamed.

Since the board cast its vote on Thursday, JFK’s only godson, Jack Schlossberg, as well as JFK’s nephews Joe Kennedy III and Tim Shriver have expressed their disappointment at the decision.

In a separate post on X, JFK’s niece Kerry Kennedy wrote, “President Trump and his administration have spent the past year repressing free expression, targeting artists, journalists, and comedians and erasing the history of Americans whose contributions made our nation better and more just. President Kennedy proudly stood for justice, peace, equality, dignity, diversity, and compassion for those who suffer. As tributes poured in from throughout Hollywood, Trump, 79, took to his Truth Social platform on Monday, December 15, to share his reaction to Rob and Michele’s deaths.

“A very sad thing happened last night in Hollywood. Rob Reiner, a tortured and struggling, but once very talented movie director and comedy star, has passed away, together with his wife, Michele, reportedly due to the anger he caused others through his massive, unyielding, and incurable affliction with a mind crippling disease known as TRUMP DERANGEMENT SYNDROME, sometimes referred to as TDS,” Trump wrote.

Obamas Were Meant to See Rob and Michele Reiner on the Day They Were Killed

He continued of Rob, “He was known to have driven people CRAZY by his raging obsession of President Donald J. Trump, with his obvious paranoia reaching new heights as the Trump Administration surpassed all goals and expectations of greatness, and with the Golden Age of America upon us, perhaps like never before. May Rob and Michele rest in peace!”

After receiving backlash for his statement from Republican officials including Thomas Massie and Marjorie Taylor Greene, Trump later doubled down on his comments when asked by a reporter if he stood by his stance.

“Well, I wasn’t a fan of his at all,” Trump responded. “He was a deranged person as far as Trump is concerned.”

Trump added that Reiner was “bad for our country” because he was outspoken against the administration.

Many stars, including Josh Gad, Patrick Schwarzenegger and more, have publicly criticized the president’s statements about Rob and Michele. Wrestler Mick Foley even denounced his affiliation with the WWE amid its continued support of Trump.

“At a time when so many in the media industry, so many with a platform are afraid to speak, he put his money and his mouth where his heart was and for Trump to have put that out today, I’m gonna say it: You know, damn it, there’s an American family grieving,” she said. “This is a tragedy, not just for the family, but for all who knew and loved him, and for the President of the United States to make this about him as a way to attack Rob Reiner, because he exercised his American right to speak up with what he disagreed with, is shameful. It is disgraceful. And of all the disgusting things that Donald Trump has done, this is right up there.”

Whoopi Goldberg

While discussing Rob and Michele’s deaths with her cohosts on The View, Whoopi Goldberg recalled the death of far-right political activist Charlie Kirk in September. “I don’t understand the man in the White House. He continued, “Blaming [Rob’s] death on the fact that he is an outspoken liberal, insulting someone who’s just been murdered, who leaves children behind without having any idea of what actually happened, it’s so hateful and vile. I feared this was something he was going to do, and I was pretty certain that it would cast a shadow on what was already a really dark day, but it was even worse than I could have imagined.”

President Trump Pardons Former New York Mets Star Darryl Strawberry

Former New York Mets star Darryl Strawberry, an eight-time MLB All-Star and three-time World Series champion, announced via Instagram on Friday, November 7, that he has been pardoned by President Donald Trump for his former tax evasion conviction.

Strawberry, 63, said in the social media post that he received the call from President Trump on Thursday, November 6. He thanked the president for “finalizing this part of my life, allowing me to be truly free.”

“Half asleep, I glanced over and saw a call from Washington, DC,” Strawberry explained in the post. “Curious, I answered, and to my amazement, the lady on the line said, ‘Darryl Strawberry, you have a call from the President of the United States, Donald Trump.’ I put it on speakerphone with my wife nearby, and President Trump spoke warmly about my baseball days in NYC, praising me as one the greatest players of the ’80s and celebrating the Mets. Then, he told me he was granting me a full pardon from my past.”

The Most Controversial Presidential Pardons Ever — and How They Work

He continued: “My wife captured the moment on video, and I was overwhelmed with gratitude – thanking God for setting me free from my past.”

Strawberry’s successful baseball career spanned from 1983 to 1999, but was marked with legal troubles and drug abuse. He pleaded guilty in the tax evasion case in 1995, after he was accused of failing to report more than $350,000 in income from autographs, personal appearances and sales of memorabilia between 1986 and 1990.

According to a report from the New York Times, a White House official said Strawberry had served his time and paid back the taxes.

“Following his career, Mr. Strawberry found faith in Christianity and has been sober for over a decade — he has become active in ministry and started a recovery center which still operates today,” the official told the Times.

“This has nothing to do with politics,” Strawberry wrote in his Instagram post, which included three photos of him alongside President Trump. “It’s about a Man, President Trump, caring deeply for a friend. God used him as a vessel to set me free forever!”

The former Rookie of the Year was the No. 1 draft pick in the 1980 MLB Draft, selected by the Mets, and made his big-league debut in 1983. He won his first World Series with the fabled 1986 Mets team that included other greats such as Dwight Gooden and Keith Hernandez.

He also played for the Los Angeles Dodgers, San Francisco Giants and New York Yankees, where he ultimately finished his career.

Strawberry won two more championships with the Yankees in 1996 and 1999.

In 2024, the Mets retired Strawberry’s No. 18 jersey. During the ceremony, he showed some remorse about leaving the Mets in 1990.

“I’m truly, deeply sorry that I ever left you guys,” he told the fans. “I never played baseball in front of fans greater than you guys.”

Strawberry finished his 17-year baseball career with 335 career home runs and 1,000 RBI. He had 1,401 total hits.

Jenna Bush Hager Sends Love to Dick Cheney’s Daughters After His Death

Former President George W. Bush‘s daughter Jenna Bush Hager is offering her support to Dick Cheney‘s daughters, Mary and Liz, after his death at age 84.

News broke on Tuesday, November 4, that Cheney died from complications of pneumonia and cardiac and vascular disease. Bush Hager, 43, spoke out about Cheney’s passing after he served in office alongside her father, 79.

“Of course, I think everybody is waking up and thinking about his family,” Bush Hager said on the Today show. “When you hear of a politician who passes, there’s tons of coverage about what they are like as a politician, but as a daughter of a politician, as a granddaughter of a politician, I just am thinking of his daughters and who they are missing, which is not necessarily a man who casts votes, but rather a man who raised them.”

Bush Hager issued a message specifically to Cheney’s children.

“So, I am thinking of Mary and Liz this morning, who I’m going to reach out to as well just to send my love, and I know my parents are thinking the very same,” she continued. “I think public grieving can be very difficult because there’s a lot about who the person is as a public figure, but very little about who they are as a dad, as a granddad, as a husband, and so I’m thinking of his family.”

Bush Hager noted that her husband, Henry Hager, is also close to Mary, saying, “Mary was very close, is close, with Henry, so Henry’s out of town, but I texted him this morning and I’m sure he’s going to reach out to her as soon as he wakes up.”

Cheney’s family released a statement after his Monday, November 3, death.

“His beloved wife of 61 years, Lynne, his daughters, Liz and Mary, and other family members were with him as he passed,” read the statement. “For decades, Dick Cheney served our nation, including as White House Chief of Staff, Wyoming’s Congressman, Secretary of Defense and Vice President of the United States.”

His family continued: “Dick Cheney was a great and good man who taught his children and grandchildren to love our country, and to live lives of courage, honor, love, kindness and fly-fishing. We are grateful beyond measure for all Dick Cheney did for our country. And we are blessed beyond measure to have loved and been loved by this noble giant of a man.”

Donna Jean Godchaux Dead: The Grateful Dead Singer Was 78

Cheney had a history of cardiovascular issues, which resulted in multiple heart attacks. He suffered the first in 1978 at age 37 and then had four more through the years before undergoing a heart transplant in 2012 at age 74.

“Although the former vice president and his family do not know the identity of the donor, they will be forever grateful for this lifesaving gift,” Cheney’s office said in a 2012 statement.

Cheney later opened up about the procedure, sharing on a 2013 episode of 60 Minutes, “When you emerge from that gift of life itself, there’s a tremendous feeling of emotion, but it’s very positive. I think my first words when I came out from under the anesthetic and they said it had worked great was, ‘Hot damn.’ Literally.”

He concluded: “You wake up every morning with a smile on your face because you’ve got a new day you never expected to have. And there’s a sense of wonderment. Nothing short of magical.”

South Africa: Cyril Ramaphosa to meet with Donald Trump in US next week

It is difficult to hide: relations between South Africa and the United States are strained and have been so for months.

Since Donald Trump took office again as president of the United States, the two countries have repeatedly clashed over the US plan to resettle white South African farmers, which Donald Trump claims face “racial discrimination” in South Africa.

And in March, Washington expelled the South African ambassador Ebrahim Rasool over critical comments he had made on the subject of the Trump administration.

Could a meeting however help improve the situation?

Late on Wednesday, Pretoria announced that South African president Cyril Ramaphosa would travel to Washington next week. On the agenda is a meeting with Donald Trump.

While the South African presidency did not further comment on the issues to be discussed by the two presidents, the tensions surrounding the white farmers’ refugee status, which the US granted earlier this week, are likely to be included in the talks.

The US welcomed 59 white South Africans as refugees this Monday, the start of what the Trump administration said is a larger relocation plan for minority Afrikaner farmers who Trump has claimed are being persecuted in their homeland because of their race.

South Africa denies the allegations and says whites in the majority Black country are not being singled out for persecution.

No evidence of “genocide” of white farmers

The Republican president has singled out South Africa over what the US calls racist laws against whites and has accused the government of “fueling” violence against white farmers.

The South African government says the relatively small number of killings of white farmers should be condemned but are part of the country’s problems with violent crime and are not racially motivated.

Trump said Monday that there was “a genocide taking place” against white farmers that was being ignored by international media.

This claim has previously however been discredited, most recently so by a South African court ruling in February.

The US criticism of what it calls South Africa’s racist, anti-white laws appears to refer to South Africa’s affirmative action laws that advance opportunities for Black people, and a new land expropriation law that gives the government power to take private land without compensation.

Although the government says the land law is not a confiscation tool and refers to unused land that can be redistributed for the public good, some Afrikaner groups say it could allow their land to be seized and redistributed to some of the country’s Black majority.
