“This year, moved by the great love that God has always been showing to me, I thought of celebrating my birthday by showing love to less fortunate families in Dowa District,” Prophetess Mary told Nyasa Times in an interview after the donations.

Prophet Bushiri’s daughter in critical condition

BLANTYRE-(MaraviPost)—Prophet Shepherd Bushiri’s daughter, who was blocked from flying to Kenya to seek medical attention by Malawi Police, is in critical condition at a local medical facility, Maravi Post has learnt.

In a statement released on Monday by Bushiri’s spokesperson, Ephraim Nyondo, the flamboyant Prophet has pleaded with government to allow his daughter to go to Kenya for the medical treatment as referred by his doctor.

“I can confirm that on Friday, 19th February, Prophet Shepherd Bushiri’s daughter was blocked from flying to Nairobi, Kenya, to seek medical attention. She was accompanied by three guardians. Prophet Bushiri and Prophetess Bushiri were not part of the delegation.

“The daughter, 8, was duly referred by competent Malawi medical professionals to seek further medical treatment and all required immigration details were in place to facilitate her travel through a chartered air ambulance. Up to date, my office hasn’t been supplied with any information as to why the child was denied the right to lawfully access medical attention after being duly referred by a competent medical practioneer,” reads the statement.

According to Nyondo, the child has severally been referred to Kenya for medical attention due to her medical condition.

“The child’s condition remains critical at the same medical facility which referred her to seek further medical attention in Kenya.  It must be underlined that this was not the first time for the child, due to her medical condition, to be referred to Kenya for medical attention. The child has been flying there several times and I am shocked with this isolated blocking,” said Nyondo adding “I have strong belief in the leadership of this country and I am certain that it will positively consider our plea and request that the child must go and have medical care just as she was referred by the doctor.”

According to a passenger manifest form, which we have seen, the prophet’s children Raphaela and Israela, cousin Esther Bushiri and mother-in-law Magdalena Zgambo were expected to depart from Kamuzu International Airport in Lilongwe last week.

The chartered plane, belonging to Phoenix Aviation, had landed at the airport and the four were checking in when they were stopped by airport security officials.

Few hours after the child was blocked from flying to Kenya, Malawi Police issued a warrant of arrest for Prophet Bushiri and Prophetess Mary Bushiri, who are in the country after jumping bail in the Republic of South Africa where they were answering charged of fraud and money laundering.

Prophet Bushiri dares South Africa government as Malawi Court rules in his favour

Prophet Bushiri and his wife

BLANTYRE-(MaraviPost)—Prophet Shepherd Bushiri, founder and leader of the Enlightened Christian Gathering (ECG), has reacted to news that South Africa government has seized his property saying his life is more important than his assets.

Bushiri, who together with his wife Mary got arrested by the Malawi Police on Wednesday, made the remarks immediately after the court released him unconditionally on Thursday in Lilongwe during an interview with the multitude of journalists who attended the court proceedings.

“My wife and I appeared before the Magistrate Court today following the decision we took to hand ourselves to Malawi Police on Wednesday after we heard that law enforcement agencies were looking for us. In his ruling the magistrate ordered that my wife and I must be released unconditionally because our arrest was illegal.

“Further, the Magistrate also ruled that whenever they have a case against my wife and I we should appear before Court through summon not arrest. I am also informed that some of my assets in South Africa have been confiscated by authorities to which I say: My right to life is more important than any asset in this world,” said Bushiri.

“Whatever has happened today, I don’t see it as our victory neither our lawyers. God has won.

Tomorrow is better than today!” he added.

Prophet Bushiri and his wife Mary surrendered themselves to police at Area 30 in Lilongwe on Wednesday after getting informed that the police were hunting him.

But Principal Resident Magistrate Viva Nyimba ordered the release of the couple who were arrested based on South Africa’s provisional request to detain him pending formal request for extradition.

Nyimba ruled that the arrest was illegal and therefore ordered unconditional release of the couple from police custody.

He also said that his ruling was based on legality of the arrest and “what happened in South Africa is for another day.”

Bushiri and wife Mary were on bail in South Africa where they are being accused of fraud and money laundering but they jumped the bail and fled to Malawi, their native country, a move he described as “a tactical withdrawal meant to preserve lives” while speaking to supporters on social media on Saturday last week.

On arrival last week Bushiri held a press briefing where he disclosed that he fled South Africa to seek the Malawi Government’s intervention over the trial he is facing in South Africa because the police officers who have been entrusted with the job to prosecute him and his wife are crooked and It is alleged that the police officers tried severally to extort money from Bushiri.

He indicated that in 2018 he filed a lawsuit against the said police officers, who are attached to South Africa’s Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation (DPCI) which targets organized crime, economic crime, corruption, and other serious crime referred to it by the President or the South African Police Service.

True to Bushiri’s words, the South Africa’s Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) confirmed on Monday that in 2018, a case of alleged police corruption and cash extortion was opened by Bushiri’s lawyer on his behalf in Sunnyside, Pretoria.

“Mr Bushiri, through his lawyer reported the alleged police corruption to IPID, as part of the investigation process, IPID required Bushiri to provide crucial information about the allegations and to acquire witness statements but Mr Bushiri’s non availability due to his busy schedule has been giving IPID Investigators a challenge to proceed with this case.

“As such, his poor co-operation, busy schedule and non availability has stalled the investigation process as crucial information required to proceed with the investigation process is not forthcoming from him as the victim in this matter. Mr Bushiri has been provided with feedback on the matter, he is well aware that the Investigator will proceed with his case as soon as he co-operates fully with investigation process,” read the statement by IPD.

South Africa reaction to Prophet Bushiri’s ‘miracle’ escape

Immediately after learning the escape of the self-proclaimed prophet known for his “miracles” and wildly extravagant lifestyle, the South Africa government issued an arrest warrant forcing the Malawi government to arrest the prophet and his wife.

“A warrant of arrest has been issued this morning by the Pretoria magistrates court for the two fugitives,” Katlego Mogale, acting spokeswoman for the elite police unit known as the Hawks, said in a statement on Monday.

The couple’s bail is also cancelled and they will each forfeit the 200,000 rand ($13,000) they had individually posted as one of the bail conditions.

South Africa also initiated a process to extradite them from Malawi to the rainbow country where they face charges of fraud and money laundering.

Seize of property

The South African Government has also seized property valued at R5.5 million owned by Shepherd Bushiri and Mary Bushiri for violating their bail conditions by escaping to Malawi.

The couple, who are being accused of money laundering and fraud, were granted bail on 4 November by Pretoria Magistrates Court and they were told not to leave South Africa before the conclusion of their case, which Crime Investigators say it involves R102 million ($6.6 million).

And on Thursday, Magistrate Thandi Thelefu, who asked for the couple to be called three times at their hearing, ruled that their property be forfeited to the state for failing to appear before the court.

According to Theledi, the property has been seized because it was tied to their bail to the state.

Bushiri’s legal team in South Africa said they were not informed of the couple’s movements and they knew about the decision through the media.

Shepherd Bushiri, born 20 February 1983 also known as Major 1 or Prophet Shepherd Bushiri, is a Malawian Christian preacher, motivational speaker, author  and businessman from Malawi.

Bushiri also runs a global investment company, Shepherd Bushiri Investments, based in Sandton near Johannesburg, with interests in mining, real estate, an airline and other entrepreneurial enterprises. According to Bushiri, he ventured into business to support his family as he does not believe the church must support his family.

Prophet Bushiri and his wife released from police custody unconditionally: “the arrest was illegal”

Prophet Shepherd Bushiri speaking to journalist after being granted bail

BLANTYRE-(MaraviPost)-Principal Resident Magistrate Viva Nyimba has ordered the release of Prophet Shepherd Bushiri and his wife Mary who were arrested based on South Africa’s provisional request to detain him pending formal request for extradition.

During the court proceedings, government’s Senior State Advocate Dr Steve Kayuni applied for the Prophet and his wife to further be detained for 30 days pending formal extradition request from South African government.

Kayuni said Malawi government has received a provisional request from SA government to detain the Bushiris while they wait for formal request which will be made through diplomatic channels.

Kayuni argued the the accused are a flight risk considering how they fled South Africa.

He argued “the couple fled the strict bail conditions they were under in SA and there is no guarantee that they can abide with bail conditions here.”

But Wapona Kita, Bushiris’ legal counsel told the court that the sworn statements of the two tell a sad story of how the fugitives are being persecuted in South Africa.

He therefore said they apply for their release unconditionally because they were arrested illegally here in Malawi.

He argued the couple presented themselves to the arresting authorities before a warrant of arrest was issued.

Kita further argued that the court was sitting illegally as the minister of justice has not issued an authority to proceed with the case

He also argued that they were applying for their unconditional release because there is no warrant of arrest from Malawi.

He said the two cannot be arrested using a warrant of arrest issued in South Africa.

Giving his ruling, Nyimba has ruled that the arrest was illegal and therefore ordered unconditional release of the couple from police custody.

Nyimba argued that his ruling is based on legality of the arrest and what happened in South Africa is for another day.

Top-notch Malawian lawyers ready to fight Prophet Bushiri’s extradition: Bring it on, the Hawks

Prophet Shepherd Bushiri and his wife

BLANTYRE-(MaraviPost)—Prophet Shepherd Bushiri of the Enlightened Christian Gathering (ECG) has assembled Malawi’s fine lawyers to fight his extradition to South Africa, a country he left last week on grounds that there had been attempts on his life and he accused the South African authorities of not offering protection.

Bushiri described his decision to skip bail as “a tactical withdrawal meant to preserve lives” while speaking to supporters on social media on Saturday.

But on Monday South Africa issued an arrest warrant for the controversial preacher who faces fraud and money laundering charges after he fled to Malawi, in breach of strict bail conditions.

Reacting, Bushiri has assembled local lawyers to fight the extradition and see to it that justice is being served.

ECG’s Director of Communications, Ephraim Nyondo, has confirmed to online publication that Bushiri has appointed prominent private practice lawyer Lusungu Gondwe from Ritz Attorneys at Law as lead lawyers, Noel Chalamanda from Knight and Knight and Bright Theu from Nicholls and Brookes as the legal team in a long-shot strategy.

According to Nyondo, the team will work Bushiri’s South African lawyers to solidify his quest for justice in the current cases of fraud and money laundering leveled against him and his wife, Mary.

Shepherd Bushiri, a self-proclaimed prophet known for his “miracles” and wildly extravagant lifestyle, was granted bail in South Africa where he lives, in a case of alleged fraud and money laundering.

On arrival last week Saturday Bushiri held a press briefing saying he had fled South Africa to seek the Malawi Government’s intervention over the trial he is facing in South Africa. He asked the Malawi government to intervene for his safety.

But Kampondeni said Chakwera will not be involved in the issue concerning Bushiri’s presence in Malawi because it is the domain of the country’s law enforcement agencies.

“President Lazarus Chakwera will not be involved because it has nothing to do with him, will not hold a meeting with anybody on the issue and will not grant any favours because it is not his domain to grant favours and he will not issue directives. President Chakwera will let law enforcers do their job in accordance with the law,” he said.

Kampondeni noted that the South African Government has started the process of extraditing Bushiri and his wife Mary Bushiri but said State House has no answers on what the law enforcement will do about the extradition request and the presence of Bushiri in Malawi.

Meanwhile, the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) has confirmed that in 2018, a case of alleged police corruption/cash extortion was opened by Bushiri’s lawyer on his behalf in Sunnyside, Pretoria.

It is alleged that the police officers investigating several allegations of rape against Bushiri were trying to extort money from Bushiri so that they make his rape charges disappear.

Mr Bushiri has been provided with feedback on the matter, he is well aware that the Investigator will proceed with his case as soon as he co-operates fully with investigation process,” reads the statement.

He is co-accused along with his wife, Mary Bushiri.

Prophetess Mary Bushiri, Ndileka Mandela sparkle at ECG’s Global Women on Fire

PRETORIA-(MaraviPost)-Head of women’s ministry at the Enlightened Christian Gathering (ECG) Church, Prophetess Mary Bushiri, joined hands with iconic Nelson Mandela’s granddaughter, Miss Ndileka Mandela, in speaking out against the escalation of gender-based violence in South Africa.

The two raised their voices during ECG’s Global Women on Fire Conference which was held at Gallagher Convention Centre in Midrand, drawing tens of thousands women across the world.

In her message, titled ‘Strength in Weakness’, Prophetess Mary Bushiri said:

“The Bible, in 1 Peter 3:7, talks about women being weaker vessels—something that, somehow, explains why women gets mistreated. The same Bible, in 2 Corinthians 12:10, talks about God’s strength is perfected in weakness.

“It is clear, therefore, that women should not view the perceived weakness as a disadvantage. Rather, an avenue for God’s strength to be perfected.

“Similarly, with the escalation of gender-based violence, it is imperative that women, in the first place, accept that they carry the perfection of God’s strength. That is why the burden of giving birth was placed upon on women. Its high time women lock hands in speaking out and taking necessary steps in stopping the scourge of GBV.”

In agreement, Ndileka Mandela called on women to begin the process of being relevant to their societies by, with little they have, they should be supporting the girl-child and fellow women who have a history of abuse.

“We cannot just sit and watch. I am happy that ECG has taken a step in bringing women together to share critical issues that affects us. Let the fire continue to blaze,” she said.

The annual Conference is part of ECG Women’s Ministry—aimed at bringing all women across the world, even non-ECG members, to share and discuss issues affecting women across the world.

ECG has over 180 branches in 26 countries across the world.
