Jealousy Rumphi ex-inmate Stephano Banda arrested for hacking to death wife’s lover

MZUZU-(MaraviPost)-The Malawi Police Service (MPS) in Rumphi is keeping in custody a 38-year-old man for allegedly stabbing to death Fumbanani Kaonga, 40 on suspicion that he had an affair with his wife.

Rumphi police station spokesperson Noel Kamchenga has identified the suspect as Stephano Banda who committed the crime on Saturday, January 6, 2024, at Pachichi, around the Chinyolo area.

The publicist Kamchenga told The Maravi Post that in 2020, the suspect Banda was arrested and remanded to Karonga prison for being found in possession of Pangolin and left behind a wife and a Child.

“Later on, the wife got employed at a Chinese construction company (Chicco) as a cleaner to support herself and while working there it is alleged that she fell in love with Kaonga.

“However in April 2023, the suspect was released from prison and came back to Rumphi only to find that his wife and child left their home and were renting a room at Pachichi where he found them with Kaonga yesterday,” said Police Publicist.

The suspect is expected to appear before court soon on murder charges.

Banda hails from Napoli village, Traditional Authority (T.A) Nkhulambe in Phalombe.

Rumphi man commits suicide over family issues

MZUZU-(MANA)-A 39-year-old man, Gibson Phiri of Mputa Village in the of Paramount Chief Chikulamayembe in Rumphi Tuesday committed suicide by hanging himself on allegations that his wife accused him of spending money on beer instead of supporting his family.

According to Rumphi Police Public Relations Officer (PRO), Sergeant Tupeliwe Kabwilo, the deceased and his wife had been quarrelling over the issue for some time.

She said due to continuous misunderstandings between the two, the wife decided to leave the family and went to stay with her close by brother.

“Upon realizing that the wife had escaped and left for her brother’s home, Phiri decided to commit suicide by hanging himself,” Kabwilo.

She said before hanging himself, Phiri left a note in his pocket stating that he killed himself over family matters.

Postmortem conducted at Rumphi District Hospital revealed that Phiri died due to suffocation.

Police in Rumphi are advising people to refrain from terminating their lives whenever they face challenges but should seek guidance and counselling relatives, religious leaders and victim support units.

Phiri hailed from Wimbe Village in the area of Traditional Authority (TA) Wimbe in Kasungu.

Malawi’s Rumphi headteacher Newton Mabaso commits suicide

MZUZU-(MaraviPost)-A 35- year- old primary school headteacher has hanged himself over family dispute at Phwamphwa area in Rumphi district.

Rumphi police station deputy Public Relations officer Tupeliwe Kabwilo has identified the deceased as Newton Mabaso of Kalimaninge Village, Traditional Authority (T.A) Chikulamayembe in Rumphi district.

Kabwilo told The Maravi Post that on October 23, 2021 Mabaso(now deceased) went to Katuli area where he officiated a football match.

“After the match, Mabaso had time to take some beer at a nearby drinking joint. Later, Mabaso and his wife hired a motorcycle and returned home.

“At home, his wife started preparing supper which raised borne of contention as the husband accused wife of late preparation of the said supper,” he says.

The police publicist added, “The delay aroused anger of hubby who ended up assaulting wife severely until she managed to escape and sought refugee alongside her children to a nearby deputy headmistress’s house.

“In the next morning, the wife accompanied by the deputy headmistress went home to resolve the matter. However, they did not find Mabaso at home which prompted them to start searching for him. Sadly, the body of Mabaso was found hanging in a nearby tree”.

“The matter was reported to Rumphi police who along with medical officers from Rumphi District hospital visited scene of incident. Postmortem confirmed that death was a result of strangulation,” says .

Meanwhile, police are appealing to community members to avoid taking their own lives whenever they face challenges, rather, they seek guidance from those in authority.

Police in Rumphi engage learners to curb child abuse

School learners from Bolero primary have been asked to report any form of abuse they meet in their daily living.

The call was made on Tuesday June 1, 2021, during a school outreach meeting which took place at Bolero primary school in Rumphi.

Speaking during the interface meeting, Officer In-charge for Rumphi police station Mr. Gelard Chiwanda who is an Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) expressed concern over surging cases of abuse against children.

 “A lot of under-aged girls are reportedly to have been defiled by men, a thing which we cannot sit and watch, let’s denounce this evil behavior by reporting such cases”, remarked Chiwanda.

He further urged teachers to collaborate with police in fighting child abuse.

Chiwanda also denounced tendency of vandalizing school property by learners whenever they disagree with authorities, rather advised learners to always seek for peaceful means of solving misunderstandings.

Sub inspector Willard Mmina who is the station’s child protection officer advised learners to refrain from indulging into drug abuse saying such lures one’s future. He added that learners who engage in lover affairs end up dropping out of school while others even commit suicide whenever addicted love ends, as such, they need to avoid.

Learners were also advised to follow road traffic rules whenever they use roads so as to avoid road accidents.

Headteacher for Bolero primary school, Wanangwa Mwandira, thanked police for pieces of advice given to learners. He therefore promised to monitor and report to police any unwelcome behavior which may derail learners’ future.
