Tiya Somba Banda resigns from Mighty Wanderers board amid CAF confederation cup participation

BLANTYRE-(MaraviPost)-Mighty Wanderers board member Tiya Somba Banda has resigned from his position, effective July 31, 2025.

The resignation comes as the team prepares to participate in the CAF Confederation Cup, and Somba Banda’s role as CAF General Coordinator could have created a conflict of interest.

According to Wanderers board secretary Chancy Gondwe, Somba Banda’s resignation was necessary to ensure the integrity and fairness of the competition.

“To ensure the integrity and fairness of the competition, it was necessary for Mr. Tiya Somba Banda to step down from his position on the Wanderers board,” Gondwe confirmed in a statement.

Somba Banda was appointed to the Wanderers board earlier this year as part of a new leadership team led by President Thomson Mpinganjira.

The team has undergone significant changes, including the appointment of new directors, in a bid to make Mighty Wanderers mighty again.

The new board, which was appointed in February 2024, comprised notable figures, including Somba Banda, Chancy Gondwe, Limbani Magomero, Mervis Mangulenje, Madalitso Kakota Musa, Dr. Andrex Kalinde, David Kanyenda, and Christopher Gondwe.

Somba Banda’s resignation marks a significant development in the team’s leadership.

Wanderers’ participation in the CAF Confederation Cup is a significant milestone for the team, and the club’s leadership is expected to ensure that the team competes fairly and with integrity.

Malawi football pundits for extension of Meck Mwase’s contract

Malawi Flames coach Mwase

BLANTYRE-(MaraviPost)—As Malawi National Football Team Coach Meck Mwase’s contract is expected to end this month on 31st, football experts are of the view that the coach must be given a chance to finish 2022 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers games before stakeholders decide on his long term fate.

According to The Nation, Football Association of Malawi (Fam), during its first executive meeting, did not make any decision regarding the coach’s future as they opted to be thorough with consultations.

An informed assessment can be done once Mwase completes Afcon assignments where results would count, sources say.

“It has been tough for the association to thoroughly assess the coach to decide whether he stays or not. No wonder it was difficult for the executive meeting to make a decision in the absence of complete results,” said the source as quoted in The Nation.

Both Fam General Secretary Alfred Gunda and the association’s head of technical subcommittee Tiya Somba-Banda said they were consulting stakeholders as Mwase’s contract was due to expire on January 31.

“We know we are racing against time but the decision will be made soon when we are through with the consultation process,” Gunda said.

On his part, Banda said they needed all stakeholders to make an input before making the final decision.

“All the details will be released once we are through with consultations,” he said.

If Mwase’s contract is extended, it means the former Nyasa Big Bullets and Be Forward Wanderers defender would be in-charge when the Flames conclude Afcon qualifiers in March against South Sudan away and Uganda at home.

Meanwhile, National Coaches Association (NCA) General Secretary Davie Mpima has said the coach needed time to be fairy assessed.

“Of course, at the beginning, we questioned his appointment because we felt he was rushed. He was supposed to spend time with Malawi Under-20 before picking up the job for the senior side.

“Anyway, we feel the right decision can be made after the qualifiers whereby the results should count. As it is I would advise Fam to further extend his contract to assess him properly. Mwase met some unfortunate conditions including the Covid-19 pandemic which made planning difficult,” he said.

Mwase was hired last year after impressing during the 2019 Cosafa Championship in South Africa, where the Flames lost in the Plate Final.

Financial crisis forces Beta TV to suspends live coverage of Super League matches: Sulom seeks legal advice

Kamuzu Barracks
KB: TNM Super League 2016 champions

LILONGWE-(MaraviPost)-The country’s Super League exclusive television rights holders Beta Television on Wednesday officially announced that will no longer beam the top flight league due to financial challenges.

The development is contrary to last week’s assurance from the company that it had secured sponsorship and promised that would unveil before last weekend’s kick-off of the league.

The announcement means that the television station has failed to fulfil the contractual obligation it undertook last season after a successful bid but now putting Super League of Malawi (Sulom) in fixed position.

Beta Television station manager Theunis Bester disclosed that the company has no money to continue with the obligation of giving Malawians live match coverage.

Bester disclosed that a single match was costing about MK500, 0000 whose returns could not surpass the expenditure hence the decision to suspend the live coverage.

The Beta TV manager was however quick to say that the situation is not permanent and that the station remains the exclusive Super League matches holders and see to the end.

“After failing to secure sponsorship, we have decided to stop production of Super League games until we get the sponsorship. It’s not that we are pulling out of it forever but we are just temporarily halting production because it seems it’s expensive to do it at the moment. There is no money to pay salaries and other expenses

“To beam live a single match cost us about MK500, 000. So, with the closure of Kamuzu Stadium most of the games will be played Mulanje. The partnership with MBC means that we were supposed to cover four games per week and for us to produce those games requires MK2 million, and that is why we need significant sponsorship,” explained Bester.

But Sulom Treasurer, Tiya Somba discosed that they will consult their legal advisors on how best to handle Beta TV decision saying the latter has breached the contract agreement.

Beta signed a three-year contract with Sulom in 2016 but the station failed to pay the league governing body MK40 million of which MK32 million was meant for to be shared by clubs.

Sulom opted to award Beta TV the rights at the expense of Times and Matindi Televisions which emerged on the second and third places respectively in the bidding process.
