DRC: Thousands evacuate amid fears of another volcano eruption

– –

Thousands of people have been evacuated in the Democratic Republic of Congo over fears of another eruption of the Nyiragongo volcano.

The governor of North Kivu province ordered the evacuation of ten districts of the city, saying an eruption could take place with very little warning.

At least 31 people are now known to have died when Nyiragongo erupted last weekend.

Houses were destroyed and Rwandan authorities have said about 3,000 people had officially crossed from Goma.

Cracks measuring hundreds of metres long have appeared in the city which is located just over 10 kilometres from the volcano.

– –

The governor has asked residents to carry “the bare-minimum to give everyone the chance to get on board” vehicles that will be provided by the provincial authority in each district.

“Return to homes can only be done on the recommendation of the provincial authority,” said Gen Costant Ndima, the military governor of North-Kivu region.

Mount Nyiragongo last erupted in 2002, killing 250 people and making 120,000 homeless. The volcano’s deadliest eruption happened in 1977, when more than 600 people died.

DR Congo: Many left homeless amid volcanic eruption

At least five deaths have been reported while people were evacuating and fleeing to safety but officials are yet confirm those reports.

Houses were destroyed in the city due to the disaster which occurred 10km (six miles) from Goma.

Rwandan authorities said about 3,000 people had officially crossed from Goma.

– –

Tom Peyre-Costa, from the Norwegian Refugee Council in Goma, told the BBC how the scene had unfolded.

“The lava was pretty slow, like, one kilometre per hour, but it didn’t stop…. It started burning the houses,” he said, adding that humanitarian organisations were already trying to address people’s needs.

Residents have also been speaking a day after the disaster, sharing their stories of the moment the eruption occurred.

One Goma resident, Richard Bahati was quoted by the BBC as saying that he heard screaming and became extremely worried as he saw the sky reddening outside.

– –

“I lived through the problem with this volcano in 2002. The volcano devastated all our homes and possessions,” he said.

The last time such an eruption occurred was in 2002 and it killed 250 people and rendered 120,000 homeless.
