Tanzania corruption crackdown: Over 400 suspects pledge to return stolen KSh 4.87 billion

DODOMA-(MaraviPost)-About 400 suspects in Tanzania corruption crackdown have pledged to return stolen money amounting to KSh4.87 billion.

The suspects were pardoned by Tanzanian President John Pombe Magufuli after they showed willingness to return stolen cash –

Others are willing to pay KSh 614.8 million together and hand over to the government minerals including gold and Tanzanite totaling 35 kilos –

The president noted the recovered cash would be used for construction of hospitals and roads.

Over 400 corruption suspects in Tanzania have pledged to return stolen Ksh 4.87 billion.

The move came after Tanzanian President John Pombe Magufuli issued a notice of enforcement action on Sunday, September 22, pardoning defendants who were willing to admit their mistakes, apologise and return stolen money and property.

“Over the course of the seven days, 467 defendants had written a letter requesting a total return of Ksh 4.87 billion,” the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP), Biswalo Mganga said in a statement.

“There are also new defendants who are willing to pay Ksh 614.8 million together and hand over to the government minerals including gold and Tanzanite totaling 35 kilos, and there are also defendants willing to pay KSh 4.4 billion in installments,” he added.

He further expressed his excitement at the response of the defendants who pledged to return public property and apologised, by ordering their release from prison.

Magufuli gave the DPP seven days to continue receiving letters from defendants who are ready to apologise and return money and property.

He, however, warned there would be no further exemption and that the release of suspects did not not mean that criminal offenses had been abolished.

The Tanzanian president called on the Institute for the Prevention and Combating of Corruption ( PCB ), prisons and the police force to continue to cooperate with the office of the DPP in implementing the exercise.
