BLANTYRE-(MaraviPost)-On Wednesday, Umodzi Youth Organization (UYO) donated Sanitary pad as a way of eradicating school absenteeism and ensuring equal education opportunities for girls.
The donation was made to Sonzowa primary school after acquired skills on sewing reusable sanitary pads to improve hygiene, and education.
UYO has donated 150 sanitary pads, sewing materials to Sonzowa primary school with support from Belinda Simpson
One of the pupils Asiyatu Kachulu believes that the reusable pads will help her for better.
“I thank UYO for the support they have given us, as they have responded to the problem we shared to them, when they were donating toilet blocks and changing rooms”, Kachulu said.
Programs Director for UYO Shy Ali observed that inclusion of boys in making reusable pads will help to end stigmatisation that comes when a girl starts her menses.
“It was noted that most girls at primary level could not attended classes, when they notices that her classmate have discovered that she has started menstruation” Ali said.
Ali pointed out that, one way of bringing together pupils, is to include boys so that they should know that it is normal for girls to menstruate.
