BLANTYRE(MaraviPost)–Mighty Wanderers launched Standard Bank Cup title defence with a bang on Sunday by securing 1-0 away victory over Moyale Barracks, a team they lost to 2-0 in the TNM Super League first round.
The game, which most of the soccer fans predicted in favour of the Kaning’ina soldiers, saw the Nomads scoring the lone goal in the 20th minute through a spot kick well taken by Mike Kaziputa after Victor Mpinganjira was brought down in the 18-yard box.
Wanderers are the defending champions of the prestigious cup and after they were drawn against the TNM Super League leaders, their chairman Jack Chamangwana vowed to defend the cup despite performing poorly in the first round of the Super league.
“We are determined to defend the title against any team whether we play away or at home,” Chamangwana said.
“It does not matter which team we play,” he added.
The Nomads will now face the Lilongwe based giants Silver Strikers in semi finals at Kamuzu Stadium in Blantyre.
The Bankers have made it to the semi finals after beating Blue Eagles 2-1 at the Silver Stadium in Lilongwe.
Silver and Wanderers also met in the finals last year in which the Lali-Lubani boys emerged victors to grab the cup for two consecutive years.
