LILONGWE-(MaraviPost)-United Transformation Movement (UTM) has withdrawn in the November 5 By – elections that will take place in Lilongwe South Constituency and Matenje Ward in Kasungu North Constituency.
In a statement released on 17th October, 2019 and signed by UTM’s Publicity Secretary, Dr Joseph Chidanti Malunga, the party says Malawi Electral Commission (MEC) Chairperson and all the commissioners have proven be grossly incompetent to manage the said elections.
“The nation will note that UTM continues to call into question the credibility of the May 21, 2019 tripartite general elections and is, in fact, disputing the presidential election result in the Constitutional Court. The nation will further recall that UTM has consistently called for the resignation of the Chairperson for the Electoral Commission and her fellow commissioners on account of its belief that they presided over an election that was acutely wanting in credibility.”
“Nothing over the last five months has changed this view on the part of UTM. It is the party’s view, therefore, that the Commission, in its current composition, does not have the legitimacy and competence to manage elections the outcome of which is going to command acceptibility to all sections of society,” reads the statement in part.
United Transformation Movement (UTM) and Malawi Congress Party (MCP) are currently challenging the results of the 21 May tripartite elections in the Constitutional Court on the basis that the polls were marred with innumerable irregularities.
Meanwhile, Human Rights Defenders Coalition (HRDC)continues to conduct nationwide protests to force the MEC Chairperson, Dr Jane Ansah all the Commissioners, to resign for maladministering the the polls.
