Zambia’s Mfuwe legislator Maureen Mabonga sentenced to eight months for seditious practices

LUSAKA-(MaraviPost)-The Lusaka Magistrate’s Court has handed down an eight-month simple imprisonment sentence to Mfuwe Member of Parliament (MP), Maureen Mabonga.

The sentencing comes after Mabonga was found guilty of engaging in seditious practices, a charge that has attracted widespread attention across Zambia’s political and legal landscape.

In addition to the custodial sentence, the court has also imposed a fine of 4,000 penalty units on the legislator.

The 4,000 penalty units translate to approximately K1,300, which Mabonga has been ordered to pay as part of the sentence.

The case stems from remarks and actions by Mabonga which the court determined to be in violation of Zambia’s laws on sedition, intended to incite disaffection against the government.

During the trial, the prosecution presented evidence that Mabonga’s conduct went beyond the bounds of lawful expression and constituted an attempt to undermine public order.

The defense team had argued that the MP was merely exercising her freedom of speech as guaranteed by the Constitution, but the court ruled that her actions crossed the legal threshold into sedition.

Magistrate’s Court officials stated that the judgment was intended to reinforce the principle that freedom of expression must be exercised responsibly and within the confines of the law.

Reactions to the verdict have been mixed, with some political commentators viewing the ruling as a necessary assertion of the rule of law, while others believe it may signal a tightening of political space in Zambia.

Mabonga, who has represented Mfuwe in the National Assembly, is now expected to serve her sentence unless a successful appeal is lodged and upheld by a higher court.

Her sentencing marks a significant moment in Zambia’s political and judicial history, underscoring the delicate balance between political expression and national security.

It remains to be seen how this development will affect her political career and the broader dynamics within her party and constituency.
