LILONGWE-(MaraviPost)-Former President of Malawi and leader of the People’s Party (PP), Joyce Banda, has urged all political parties in the country to practice peaceful politics and refrain from acts of violence as the nation prepares for the upcoming elections scheduled for September 16.
She made the remarks on Monday during a meeting with the Malawi Peace and Unity Commission, an organization working to promote peace and unity across the country.
Banda emphasized that her party, the People’s Party, along with its supporters, is committed to promoting peace and conducting politics in a manner that fosters national unity and stability.
She called upon all political actors in the country to embrace non-violent dialogue and respectful engagement, especially during the heated political campaign period.
The meeting is part of an ongoing initiative by the Malawi Peace and Unity Commission to engage political leaders and key stakeholders in ensuring that the upcoming elections are held in a peaceful environment.
Chairperson of the Commission, Bishop Mary Nkosi, also stressed the importance of peace-focused political discourse, warning that the absence of peace can severely compromise the credibility and outcome of elections.
Nkosi stated that it is critical for political parties and their supporters to prioritize messages of peace and unity in all their activities leading up to the September 16 elections.
The Malawi Peace and Unity Commission has so far held discussions with several notable political figures including President Lazarus Chakwera, UTM’s Dalitso Kabambe, United Democratic Front (UDF) leader Atupele Muluzi, and People’s Development Party (PDP) president Kondwani Nankhumwa, among others.
The ongoing engagements are part of a broader strategy to foster a culture of political tolerance and to prevent violence and division during the electoral period.
