
BLANTYRE-(MaraviPost)-The Malawi Police at Chileka International Airport in Blantyre, on Tuesday arrested a 21-year old British national for attempting to externalize forex worth US$10,000 (MK7.4 million).
Airport Police spokesperson Sapulain Chitonde, identified the suspect as Mustafa Arif, who was trying to externalize the forex without a permit.
Arif, a businessman, was arrested as he was about to board a plane to South Africa via Malawian Airlines.
Chitonde said the suspect’s arrest came after police conducted a physical search on him, and his luggage whereupon being questioned, Arif failed to produce supporting papers of the money he wanted to externalize.
The police publicist added that Arif will appear before court soon, to answer two charges of Attempting to Externalize Foreign Currency without Permit and Illegal Possession of Foreign Currency.
The arrest of the British national comes barely a week after a Malawian woman identified as Madalitso Chimbuli, was also arrested at Kamuzu International Airport (KIA) for attempting to take forex out of the country without permit.
