LILONGWE-(MaraviPost)-Southern Africa development community (SADC) has expressed dismay over devastating loss of lives and properties due to torrential rains and floods in KwaZulu Natal Providence of South Africa.
This follows the displacement of over 116, 708 people and completely destroyed 4,000 homes with 8, 300 others partially damaged.
In a statement signed by the Chairperson of SADC president Lazarus Chakwera conveys heartfelt condolences to the people and government of republic of South Africa and bereaved families and wishes those injured a quick recovery.
Chakwera has also assured them that SADC stands in solidarity with the government of South Africa and those Affected by disaster.
“May I call upon all stakeholders and partners within and beyond the region to continue to support the recovery efforts and provide the humanitarian assistance that is urgently required while also supporting government to build back better,” Chakwera states
Meanwhile SADC also calls upon its member states to continue to put in place measures to scale up implementation of the Sendai Framework for disaster risk reduction (2015-2030) by strengthening early warning capacities and capabilities.
Reports indicates that 643 people have died while 72 are reported missing in the aftermath of the misadventure.
