…….cancels solidarity march
LILONGWE-(MaraviPost)-The National Organization of Nurses and Midwives of Malawi (NONM) has distanced itself from the Ntcheu nurse, saying as a professional body would not want to support what the nurse has done insulting the country’s Head of State and his wife.
The nurse body has therefore cancelled its planned nationwide strike in support of the nurse who has since been arrested in connection to a WhatsApp conversation on the erstwhile governing Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) Rebranding forum.
The organization’s president, Shouts Galang’aza Simenza, said after accessing the conversation in question, NONM being a professional body, finds it unrealistic to stage a sit-in hence distancing itself from the nurse’s conduct.
Simeza said the decision to cancel the protest has been arrived at following revelations that Mainje’s statement was made on a political WhatsApp forum and out of his personal capacity, and not as a nurse.
NONM had planned to hold the protest to force the Malawi Police Service (MPS) to unconditionally release 39-year-old nurse, Chidawawa Mainje.
Announcing the arrest, National Police Deputy Publicist Inspector Harry Namwaza said that the police will not tolerate lawlessness when people are exercising their freedom of expression arguing every right has a responsibility.
Mainje used obscene and unprintable words against Chakwera, which is contrary to Section 86 of the Electronic Transactions and Cyber Security Act of 2016, according to Namwaza.
In reaction to the arrest, NONM issued a statement in which it announced a nationwide strike beginning today, Monday, May 2, 2022 to force the law enforcers to release the suspect.
