Armed DPP cadets disrupt AFORD rally in Rumphi

Armed Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) cadets on Sunday disrupted a rally organized by AFORD President Enock Chihana at Rula in Rumphi district.

The cadets, who were in DPP attire, beat AFORD supporters as well as 11 traditional leaders and broke the podium.

Confirming the development, AFORD campaign director Boyeke Mnthari said the cadets who carried Panga Knives and other metal objects snatched AFORD clothes from the supporters.

According to him, the development occurred before the party’s President Enoch Chihana arrived at the scene.

“They were beating everyone, and broke our podium. As I am talking, one of the traditional leaders is battling for his life at Livingstonia Hospital,” he said.

However, Mnthari said the party President did not postpone the rally but addressed few people who returned at the scene after the development.

Some quarters suspect that the cadets were sent by the Minister of Transport Jappie Mhango who is the Member of Parliament for the area.

DPP regional governor Kenneth Sanga refused to comment on the matter and referred this reporter to Mhango.

“I can’t comment on that, ask honorable Jappie Mhango because he is the DPP campaign director and owner of the area,” said Sanga.

However, Mhango’s mobile phone was out of reach when contacted.

During the meeting, Chihana urged AFORD supporters to be strong and not allow to be intimidated. Chihana said DPP members are afraid of AFORD which is growing in the north.
