Member of Parliament for Mangochi West Geoffrey Chiondo has joined the governing Democratic Progressive Party (DPP).
Speaking during a reception at Malembo Primary School in Traditional Authority Nankumba, Chiondo said although he won on an independent ticket, he had rejoined the DPP being a party that groomed him in politics.

DPP Secretary General Ecklen Kudontoni said the development was a clear manifestation of the party’s strength in the country.

“I contested on an independent ticket and won the Parliamentary Elections however contesting as an independent was my wish because I think I was duped during Primary elections,” Chiondo said.

The MP said he consulted his constituents to come up with the decision and is confident that the constituents would rally behind DPP.
DPP Secretary General Henry Kudontoni said the party was looking forward to work with him and the rest of the constituents.

Kudontoni said the party is growing everyday hence the defection of other members from other parties.

Kudontoni said a good number of people, who turned out for the occasion, showed that the party was gaining ground in Mangochi.

The defection has made the DPP to secure a constituency in Mangochi as the party had no member of parliament during the recent tripartite elections.
