In a move aimed at promoting culture through film industry, united in Culture Education and Developing Artists Company (UCEDA) will this Friday premier a new movie entitled Unappreciated, at Bunda College Campus in Lilongwe.
This is the second time the company will be premiering the movie because the first version had some technical glitches.
“We have decided to re-premier the film because the previous version had a lot of technical glitches in terms of color, sound, the floor of the scenes was not tight as well as the picture,” revealed UCEDA Director Pascal Bagaluza in an exclusive interview.
He expressed optimism that the movie will have great impact to development of the Malawi since it has moral aspects that affect people’s livelihood in the country.
However, Bagaluza says time has come to break the silence to fight against piracy. He appealed to the general public to take a full responsibility and by following legal means of acquiring copies of the film following the copyright laws rather than killing the industry with the unauthorized duplication which attracts a fine in court of law in Malawi.
“Piracy is the big problem in the country. It really kills in as far as film market industry is concerned,” he says
UCEDA Managing Director based in Canada Peter Kepkay who is in the country for the promotions of film industry emphasized that Malawian films have the potential to leave an indelible mark on the international market.
But for this to be achieved, says Kepkay a Hollywood expert tee who has been in the industry for over 14 years, “Malawians need to collaborate.”
Kepkay suggests that to help curb the problem of piracy prices of products in film industry need to be fair and affordable.
“If people are buying pirate copies it means that they want to see movies, therefore, lets provide with them want they want,” he says.
In her remarks Asyyatu Mwamadi, an actor in the movie says the film is suitable for all age groups as well us people living in the remotest areas in the country villages.
However, she bemoaned financial problem is a limiting factor affecting the film industry in Malawi hence resulting to poor quality in most of artistic works.
Among other activities during the premier include disco, live music performances by Sally Nyundo and King David and from international artist of Kenya whom are already in country.
UCEDA has so far produced three movies to its credit such as World Speech, The lost advice and the soon to be premiered Unappreciated. After Bunda, UCEDA will take Unappreciated to Chancellor College and MZUNI.
