The Washington D.C. community is in shock after a terror attack at the Capital Jewish Museum claimed the lives of two Israeli embassy staffers, Yaron Lischinsky and Sarah Milgrim.
The couple, who were attending a cocktail event for young diplomats and Jewish professionals, were shot and killed at close range on Wednesday night.
According to eyewitnesses, the shooter, Elias Rodriguez, 30, of Chicago, had been seen pacing outside the museum before the attack. He reportedly opened fire on a group of four people, then pretended to be a frightened eyewitness, asking staff to call the police. When law enforcement arrived, Rodriguez confessed to being the shooter, taking out a keffiyeh and shouting “Free Palestine!”
The Israeli embassy spokesperson, Tal Naim Cohen, condemned the attack, saying, “We have full faith in law enforcement authorities on both the local and federal levels to apprehend the shooter and protect Israel’s representatives and Jewish communities throughout the United States.” Israeli Ambassador to the U.S. Yechiel Leiter described the couple as being about to get engaged, with Lischinsky having already purchased an engagement ring and planning to propose to Milgrim on a trip to Jerusalem next week.
Lischinsky, who worked in the political department of the Israeli embassy, held degrees in International Relations from Hebrew University and Government, Diplomacy & Strategy from Reichman University in Herzliya. He was the brother of ALL ISRAEL NEWS Correspondent and News Desk Manager Hanan Lischinsky.
The American Jewish Committee (AJC) CEO Ted Deutch expressed his devastation, saying, “We are devastated that two cherished friends and partners from the Israeli embassy were shot and killed as they left an AJC event at the Capital Jewish Museum earlier this evening. This is a shocking act of violence, and our community is holding each other tighter tonight.”
President Isaac Herzog and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu also condemned the attack, with Herzog posting a message on social media, saying he was “devastated” by the attacks, and Netanyahu calling out the “wild incitement” and “blood libels” that led to the attack.
The incident has raised concerns about the safety of Jewish communities and Israeli representatives in the United States.
As the investigation continues, the community comes together to mourn the loss of the young couple and demand an end to hate-motivated violence.
The attack serves as a stark reminder of the ongoing threat of antisemitism and terrorism, and the need for increased vigilance and cooperation between law enforcement agencies and communities to prevent such attacks in the future.
As the world watches, the hope is that justice will be served, and measures will be taken to ensure the safety and security of all individuals, regardless of their background or faith.
