LILONGWE-(MANA)-Political analyst Mavuto Bamusi has described President Lazarus Chakwera’s concession in the 2025 General Elections as a surprising turn of events, considering the tone and actions of the Malawi Congress Party (MCP) in recent days.

Bamusi made the remarks in an interview after President Lazarus Chakwera’s national address, in which he conceded defeat and congratulated Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika.

“In light of how the running mate was mobilizing people through press conferences, and how the MCP was actively pursuing legal challenges, it gave the impression that Chakwera was not going to willingly concede defeat,” Bamusi said.

He noted that the growing vote margin between Chakwera and Mutharika played a major role in the president’s decision to step down.

“The number of votes amassed by former President Mutharika were huge, and the gap kept widening by the day.

“This was one of the key determinants that led President Chakwera to concede,” he explained.
Bamusi further commended Chakwera’s move, saying it helped prevent possible unrest and demonstrated true leadership.

“At this point, the whole world has its eyes on Malawi. Anything contrary to a concession could have triggered violence.

“President Chakwera has shown that he is a statesman. He has shown the character of statesmanship,” he said.

Concurring with Bamusi, Chairperson for the Centre for Human Rights and Rehabilitation (CHRR), Michael Kaiyatsa, applauded Chakwera’s decision, calling it a rare and commendable act for a sitting president.

“We congratulate the incoming President, Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika, for winning the elections.
“We are truly impressed by the decision Malawians have re-elect,” he said.

Kaiyatsa urged Mutharika to honor his campaign promises and lead with vision and integrity.
“My advice is that Peter Mutharika should keep his promises and rule the country with visionary leadership. This position comes with huge responsibilities entrusted to him by Malawians,” said Kaiyatsa.
