Another setback for PP as MEC rejects their Candidate for Local Government

1 Min Read

The Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) has handed down another setback to the Peoples party by rejecting their nominated candidate for Chibanja Ward in Mzuzu.

MEC says it has rejected the nomination of Blackson Kalwena Gondwe because he registered fraudulently.

At its meeting held Friday, July 31, 2015, the Malawi Electoral Commission said it approved 29 out of 30 candidates who applied to contest in the August 25 local government by-elections.

A statement signed by chief elections officer Willie Kalonga indicates that Gondwe’s nomination has been rejected on the basis that he obtained registration fraudulently.

Despite the electoral body interpreting that the development means PP will not have a candidate in Chibanja Ward during the by-elections, PP spokesperson Ken Msonda said the party has already identified a replacement.

The by elections will be conducted in Khwawa Ward in Karonga; Chibanja Ward in Mzuzu; Msikisi Ward in Mangochi, Zomba Central Ward in Zomba and Lutchenza Ward in Thyolo.

The Peoples party has seen many of its leadership abandon the party for greener pastures in the Absence of founder former President Joyce Banda.

At times it feels like the only active defender and member who is still left standing is outspoken Kenneth Msonda. Kenneth Msonda ever optimistic appears to not see the walls closing in on his party.
