BLANTYRE-(MaraviPost)-Malawi netball has received a major boost following confirmation that three local players will feature in the prestigious Deloitte Netball Super League in Singapore.
The Netball Association of Malawi (NAM) announced that Melia Soko, Stella Matelezi and Tendai Masamba have secured contracts with clubs competing in the Asian league.
According to NAM, the transfers were made possible through successful engagements with Step Out 7, in collaboration with the Singapore Netball Association, showing the value of international partnerships.
Vanessa Sisters shooter Melia Soko will turn out for Sneakers, where she is expected to bring attacking flair and experience gained from high level tournaments.
Blue Eagles defender Stella Matelezi has joined Orcaz, a side that will rely on her defensive discipline and calmness under pressure.
Meanwhile, Tigresses’ Tendai Masamba will play for Blaze, a team believed to be keen on her versatility and leadership qualities.
NAM says Soko and Matelezi earned selection after impressive displays at the Netball World Youth Cup and the Africa Netball Cup, where they stood out among the continent’s best.
Masamba’s selection, on the other hand, is attributed to her consistent performances with the Malawi national team in various international assignments.
The Deloitte Netball Super League is scheduled to run from 14 February to 29 March, providing the trio with several weeks of top flight competition.
NAM believes the exposure will not only benefit the players individually but also strengthen the national team when they return with new skills and experience.
The association has described the move as a positive signal to young netballers across Malawi that international opportunities are achievable through hard work and discipline.
Sports analysts Ibrahim Phiri said that the development could open doors for more Malawian players to be scouted by clubs outside Africa.
