3 Min Read

The Lake of Stars Malawi Arts Festival 2026 will take place from 2 to 4 October in Nkhotakota. Celebrating more than two decades of impact, the festival continues to showcase Malawi’s arts, culture, and tourism on a global stage.

“Lake of Stars is a catalyst for creativity, community empowerment, tourism business, and economic growth,” said Sharmila Elias-Taijala, Director of DOPE, the official production team behind the festival. “We are thrilled to unite people from all walks of life to celebrate Malawi’s vibrant cultural heritage while inspiring young creatives and communities. This festival has always been more than entertainment; it is a transformative platform for development and positive change. Many of us in the creative industry are living proof of that.”

Building on previous editions, this year’s festival theme is “Festivals with Purpose – Inspire, Connect, Invest, Celebrate.” The 2026 programme will feature a vibrant mix of:

  • Fashion
  • Waste and visual arts
  • Crafts and cuisine
  • Music (live bands, DJs, amapiano, afro-beats, jazz, rap, RnB)
  • Folklore and storytelling
  • Poetry and film
  • Workshops and masterclasses
  • Sustainability and responsible waste management remain central to all festival activities, reflecting a commitment to the Sustainable Development Goals.

Community Initiatives

Ahead of the festival, DOPE will implement several community-based initiatives:

Mbalame Village Soccer Tournament (20 September – 4 October)
Inspired by Malawian football icon Temwa Chawinga and supported by the Fresh Water Project, this tournament promotes female participation in sport. Young girls from rural communities will compete for the Temwa Chawinga Trophy and receive new soccer kits.

Day of Ideas Youth Festival (1 October)
A free platform connecting and mentoring secondary school students from lakeshore communities in Nkhotakota, supported by the DEM. Workshops, discussions, and creative activities will inspire students to become future leaders and innovators.

Khalani O Masuka Community Guest Experience
Returning in 2026, this initiative allows festival attendees to stay with local families through affordable community homestays. The experience supports fishing village households while encouraging cultural exchange and ensuring tourism benefits local communities directly.

“We are once again excited for the 2026 edition of Lake of Stars,” said Mr Humphrey Mpondaminga, Director of the Department of Arts in Malawi’s Ministry of Youth, Sports and Culture. “Lake of Stars is a premier arts festival in Malawi that has shaped artists, empowered communities, and redefined the influence of the music industry in tourism.”

Since returning to Nkhotakota, the festival has contributed to local development, including growth in hospitality infrastructure and increased tourism. Organisers remain committed to nurturing Malawi’s creative sector, promoting cultural exchange, and supporting socio-economic progress.

The 2026 Lake of Stars Malawi Arts Festival promises three days of unforgettable experiences, connecting Malawi to the world and the world to Malawi.
