Exploring Lake Malawi by Bicycle at Pumulani

2 Min Read

Pumulani, being the African island-style paradise that it is, is best known for providing unforgettable Malawi lakeshore experiences; however, recently there has been a large gain in popularity for mountain biking. Pumulani has a vast network of trails and paths that connect the local villages to each other, making mountain biking an excellent way to explore the island and meet the locals. This is what recent guest, Kyle, had to say about it: “My wife and I chose to hire mountain bikes as many of the paths on the island are dirt…It was great! The paths were not difficult and they allowed us to see the lesser known parts of the Lake and really take in the scenery.”

Winter is the perfect season for mountain biking in Malawi as the climate is dry and cool, but the really appealing thing about mountain biking at Pumulani is that it can be combined with kayaking. Guests are guided through woodland and village areas and finish the ride on the lake shore across the bay from Pumulani. Kayaks are waiting there so cyclists can paddle their way back across the Kasankha Bay.

In fact, biking around the island has become such a popular activity that Pumulani recently held an event aimed specifically at mountain biking enthusiasts. The adventurers stayed at Pumulani for two nights and spent the weekend guided through villages, countryside and forests on their bicycles. It wasn’t all about biking though! As with any Pumulani experience, the guests enjoyed lots of down time around the ‘Lake of Stars’ whether indulging in some waterskiing, wake boarding or even just enjoying a Gin and Tonic on the sundowner cruise.
