In 2009, the World Boxing Federation was finally re-established under its original name as a non-profit sports organization properly registered in the state of Luxembourg. South African Howard Goldberg, from Cape Town, an experienced boxing administrator for many years, assumed the position of president, with former president Ron Scalf lending his support for the first half year in the position as vice president.
Flamboyant President Howard Goldberg has offered to host fights in Malawi on several occasions but claims he has failed to work with the sports authorities in Malawi.
On its website the Federations claims that In less than five years since, the re-founded WBF has sanctioned over 250 championship contests worldwide, regaining and actually exceeding its former status and became a serious contender to the few more established sanctioning groups in boxing today.
However the list of its champions are unknown to many boxing avid followers. In the Heavyweight Division the Zhang Junlong (China) definitely not a household name.
Cruiserweight Division you have Tamas Kovacs (Slovakia) and Zine E. Benmakhlouf (Alg.).
Light Heavyweight Division (175 Lbs or 79, 38 kg) you have Tony Averlant (France), Cedric Bellais (French Polynesia) and Richard Baranyi (Hungary).
Super Middleweight Division (168 Lbs or 76, 36 kg) you have Alexander Brand (Colombia) and Mischa Nigg (Switzerland).
The list in the other divisions continue with a lot of locally known boxers.
However the organization is worthy supporting as it is based in Africa and has potential to represent Malawi boxers on the international scene.
Howard Goldberg has featured some bouts in the USA televised on ESPN.
