Malawi music icon Ben Michel Makhamba sticks to music despite being village man

BLANTYRE-(MaraviPost)-The country’s music icon Ben Mankhamba now village headman Chingalire has described his chieftancy-role as a stepping stone to his music career.

Mankhamba an enthusiastic stage performer left the active music stage years ago to pursue a calling as traditional leader in Nsalu, Lilongwe.

However, in an interview the musician said his stay in the village has enriched his understanding of “traditional and culture”.

“My role as chief came as a challenge but it’s benefited me much to deepen my understanding of real-life challenges which we [musicians] sing as imaginary,” he said.

Meanwhile, the artist has has recorded a new single “Moyo Wakumudzi” a song whose narrative is to portray how influential people use the poor for their gains.

Meanwhile, Mankhamba has revealed, he is establishing a facility to be training locals in his area about arts.

During his active days as musician, Mankhamba won several local and international awards.

He is also decorated for sharing stage with international musicians both in Malawi and outside the country.
