Malawi Congress Party urges Lhomwe belt chiefs to work with government

BLANTYRE-(MaraviPost)—The ruling Malawi Congress Party (MCP), a partner of Tonse Alliance, has asked chiefs in the Lhowme belt to work with the current government in fostering development in their areas of jurisdiction.

The appeal was made on Tuesday by the MCP campaign director Moses Kunkuyu who met the traditional leaders in Chiradzulu.

Kunkuyu told the chiefs that their areas stand to benefit more from a ramp of development projects of the Tonse Alliance if they cooperate and work with the government of the day.   

Chiradzulu is one of the strongholds of the former ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) which was defeated in the June 23 fresh presidential election.

Recently, DPP Vice President for the South and leader of opposition in parliament Kondwani Nankhumwa, encouraged chiefs and people in the Lhomwe belt to continue rallying behind the party and its leadership despite losing the government.

Nankhumwa made the plea when he was guest of honour at a ceremony where Member of Parliament (MP) for Mulanje South Constituency Santiago Phiri donated new gowns to over 30 traditional chiefs drawn from the constituency.

Senior Chief Mabuka assured Nankhumwa of continued support by describing his presence at the ceremony as a source of inspiration to the chiefs and people of the area to continue supporting DPP.
