LILONGWE-(MaraviPost)-In a twist of events in which Tonse government went on with a propaganda that teachers have ended their stay away last week, Teachers Union of Malawi (TUM) has again rejected another request from government officials asking them to return for work.
In an interview on Sunday, February 28, 2021 TUM President Willy Malimba hinted that teachers will not take any threats from government forcing them to work.
Malimba told government clearly that teachers will not go back to school until their demands are met
He has therefore has therefore edged all teachers not to resume work until government works out on risk allowances.
“We are not going back to class until our needs are met. Teachers must not be threatened or intimidated with government forcing to go back to class.
“We know certain members of our group met President Lazarus Chakwera to end the strike but did not have our blessings. So, disregard their calls. TUM president and Secretary General sign final decision of the body not anyone else,” charged Malimba.
He added, “Its an insult telling teachers that will be the first to get Covid-19 vaccination instead of risk allowance. No risk allowance, no teaching, period”.
On Sunday, Ministry of Education threatened teachers forcing them to be in class on Monday, March 1, 2021.
Teachers will be into second week on strike after government refused to give risk allowance on Covid-19 instead dared them to be the first to get Coronavirus vaccine.
