Abida Mia appeals for peace, coexistence through responsible journalism

BLANTYRE-(MaraviPost)-Water and Sanitation Minister Abida Mia has emphasized the need for promoting peace and coexistence through responsible journalism.

Mia made the appeal on Saturday, June 14, 2025 in Blantyre during Association of Muslim Journalists in Malawi (AMUJO).

Th annual general meeting has brought together Muslim journalists from across the country.

The meeting focused on promoting peace and coexistence through responsible journalism, particularly in the lead-up to the elections.

The Water and sanitation Minister Mia therefore emphasized the importance of journalists being aware of the potential for political violence and taking steps to prevent it from escalating.

She observes, “Freedom of speech is a fundamental right, but it must be exercised with wisdom and responsibility,” she said.

“Journalists must be mindful of the impact of their words and ensure that they are building, not breaking, the fabric of society.”

Mia highlighted the government’s commitment to providing complete freedom to journalists, but also emphasized the responsibility that comes with this freedom.

“Journalists can play a vital role in promoting unity across religions and communities,” she said.

The President of AMUJO, Chekaukutu Ndege, expressed his gratitude to the guest of honor and highlighted the progress that the association has made since its establishment.

“I am impressed by the progress that the association has made, and I am confident that with continued support, it will continue to thrive,” he said.

The meeting provided a platform for Muslim journalists to discuss the challenges they face in promoting peace and coexistence through their work.
