AFORD forgives arrogant Yeremiah Chihana after apology

LILONGWE-(MaraviPost)-The opposition Alliance for Democracy (AFORD) has forgiven its sole Member of Parliament (MP) Yeremiah Chihana after made apology of his misconduct to the party’s Disciplinary Committee hearing.

Defiant Chihana was summoned on May 20, 2024, over remarks he made during the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) political rally in Blantyre a week ago.

In a press statement issued on Tuesday, May 21, signed by AFORD Secretary General (SG) Linda Limbe said Chihana should not at any time make any pronouncements without being authorized by the party.

“The Alliance for Democracy (AFORD) summoned Hon. Yeremiah Chihana to appear before the Disciplinary Committee on 16th May, 2024. This follows the pronouncements at DPP rally where the following statements were made: That as a Member of Parliament elected on AFORD ticket and an ex-official member of the Party’s National Executive Committee, he was delegated by the party and its leadership to attend and represent it at the DPP rally in Blantyre; That he was duly authorized to make a statement regarding an Alliance and support from AFORD Party to Professor Peter Mutharika in the 2025 elections which is not the position of the party,” reads in part AFORD statement.

The statement adds, “Following his failure to attend the hearing on 16th May, 2024, he was summoned again to appear before the Disciplinary Committee on the 20th May, 2024. On this day, he appeared and the resolutions were made.

“Following his apology rendered to the Disciplinary Committee, the Party has forgiven Hon. Yeremiah Chihana, the Party agreed that Hon. Yeremiah Chihana should not at any time make any pronouncements without being authorized by the Party, as a Member of Parliament and Ex-Official of the National Executive, he is permitted to actively participate in all party activities in conformity with the Constitution and the party reserves the right to take action if he contravenes the guiding principles of Alliance for Democracy”.

AFORD is currently enjoying political Malawi’s atmosphere after breaking from President Lazarus Chakwera’s Tonse Alliance government.
