Airtel Malawi takes a stand against online scams with AI-powered spam alert

LILONGWE-(MaraviPost)-Airtel Malawi has taken a significant step in protecting its customers from fraud by launching an AI-powered spam alert service.

This innovative tool provides real-time alerts to customers, helping them identify and avoid potential scams.

Launched on Wednesday night, July 2, 2025 in the capital Lilongwe, is the first of its kind in African countries where Airtel operates.

Airtel Malawi Managing Director, Aashish Dutt disclosed that the service is expected to minimize the many fraud complaints that customers have been facing.

The Director General for the Malawi Communications Regulatory Authority (MACRA), Daud Suleman, has praised Airtel’s initiative, noting that it’s a step in the right direction.

Minister of Information and Digitalisation, Moses Kunkuyu, has encouraged other service providers and tech companies to follow Airtel’s lead.

Kumkuyu believes that digital and innovative solutions are key to protecting Malawians from online threats.

Malawians have been complaining about fraudulent activities, and this service is expected to provide much-needed protection.

The need for spam protection is evident, with an estimated 15.5 million spam messages sent to customers in a month, and 1 out of 10 being successful.

Airtel’s new service is a welcome development, and it’s hoped that it will set a precedent for other service providers to follow
