Malawi President Peter Mutharika and the First Lady Gertrude Mutharika last Tuesday hosted a Children’s Christmas Party at Kamuzu Palace, in the capital, Lilongwe.
Activities started at noon with children singing songs, reciting poems and Biblical verses. Some of the children enjoyed games in a giant inflatable kid playground at the State House Christmas party.
Food and snacks were provided for the kids. To most of the lucky invited kids this was the first time they were able to play in a very safe environment. They were exposed to a giant inflatable kid playground.
Even If this was a onetime thing our President Peter Mutharika gave these kids a memorable day and that is what we should have been talking about. Instead the headlines were full of ‘fwee, fwee fault finders’, why?
The answer is easy. President Mutharika has not been given a chance to succeed. Instead every quarter of the Malawi society and Donors from day one has found fault with everything he has tried to do.
While it is our right to hold strikes and demonstrations, is it not obvious that Peter Mutharika inherited a cash strapped economy? A cashgate plundered economy? Can we not agree that these problems require time to resolve?
Within hours of Joyce Banda being sworn in, aid was being released and promised from the Donors, South Africa and Zimbabwe, Nigeria and many more countries.
Who came to the aid of Peter Mutharika? Did anyone write articles critical of Joyce Banda within the first 100 days of assuming office?
If we want this President to fail so much we might just get our wish. However what many of us are failing to see is that his failure is our failure as well. It is many Malawians who will continue to suffer.
