BLANTYRE-(MaraviPost)-Blantyre City Mayor Isaac Jomo Osman has urged Muslims to continue practicing acts of kindness and charity even after the holy month of Ramadhan has ended.
Osman made the remarks on Saturday at Kamuzu Upper Stadium in Blantyre during this year’s Eid-ul-Fitr prayers, which drew a large gathering of Muslims celebrating the end of the fasting period.
Ishmael Kazembe President of Nikkah and Other Functions Association (NIFA) told The Maravi Post that the body responsible for organizing the prayers.Kazembe said the strong turnout of Muslim reflected unity and devotion among the Muslim faithful.
Kazembe emphasized that such unity should go beyond Ramadhan, encouraging Muslims to continue supporting the less privileged and maintaining the spirit of generosity throughout the year.
During the same event, Sheikh Swaleh Ibrahim, who delivered the Eid sermon, described Ramadhan as a classroom where believers are taught discipline, patience and devotion to God.
He warned that those who return to sinful behavior after Ramadan do so knowingly, despite having learned important spiritual lessons and urged Muslims to remain committed to righteous living.
Meanwhile, President Peter Mutharika has pardoned 27 inmates as part of efforts to mark both Eid-ul-Fitr and the upcoming Easter celebrations.
According to a statement from the Ministry of Homeland Security signed by Secretary Linda Moyo, the pardoned inmates include prisoners who have served at least half of their sentences, the elderly, women, the chronically ill and those selected to pursue studies in public universities.
The statement further indicated that all beneficiaries met the requirements of the Guidelines for Granting Pardons to Convicted Prisoners and demonstrated good behavior and reform during their incarceration.
The presidential pardon has been granted under Section 89(2) of the Constitution of the Republic of Malawi, which empowers the Head of State to exercise mercy in deserving cases.
