LILONGWE-(MaraviPost)-Over 650 families in Mchinji District are struggling to rebuild their lives after devastating floods swept through the area last week, destroying homes, businesses, and livelihoods.
Currently many are relying on temporary shelter and emergency assistance in response to the crisis,
Hope Field Initiative, operating under Salvation for All Ministries International, has stepped in to provide urgent relief.
The organization has distributed essential supplies including maize flour, blankets, and other basic necessities to displaced families.
Making the donation,Founder for the ministry,Apostle Clifford Kawinga, said the scale of destruction left them with no choice but to act swiftly.
“We saw the extent of the damage and knew we had to respond,” he said.
Kawinga added that beyond immediate relief, the organization plans to empower affected communities with irrigation farming equipment to support long-term recovery and self-reliance.
Among those hardest hit is Stella Kachepa of Kaigwazanga Village under Senior Chief Kawere, who estimates her losses at over MK6 million.
Her grocery business, valued at approximately K5.4 million, was completely wiped out overnight.
“On Wednesday, I had just arranged goods in my grocery shop, but by Thursday everything was gone,” she recounted.
Kachepa said the floods not only destroyed her business but also swept away group savings she had been keeping at home, along with all her household belongings.
Many displaced families are now taking refuge at Kaigwazanga Primary School, where relief efforts are ongoing.
However, the need remains overwhelming as victims seek both immediate assistance and sustainable solutions to rebuild their lives.
Mchinji District Commissioner Reinghard Chabvula has commended Hope Field Initiative for its timely intervention, noting that more support is still required to reach all those affected.
As recovery efforts continue, authorities and humanitarian groups are urging further assistance to help the district move from crisis to rebuilding.
