WASHINGTON-(MaraviPost)-Robert Mueller, the former FBI director who led the investigation into Russia’s interference in the 2016 US presidential election, has passed away at 81.
His family confirmed his death, citing “deep sadness” without revealing the cause or location.
Mueller’s tenure as FBI director (2001-2013) transformed the agency into a 21st-century intelligence service focused on national security and civil liberties.
He played a crucial role in exposing abuses at secret CIA prisons and led the FBI’s response to the 9/11 attacks.
In 2017, Mueller was appointed special counsel to investigate Russia’s election meddling and potential collusion with the Trump campaign.
His 448-page report detailed substantial contacts between the Trump campaign and Russia but didn’t establish a criminal conspiracy.
Mueller’s investigation sparked intense debate, with Trump accusing him of running a “witch hunt”.
Despite controversy, Mueller remained respected for his integrity and commitment to justice.
Born into an affluent New York family, Mueller served in the US Marine Corps, including in Vietnam, where he received the Bronze Star and Purple Heart.
He graduated from Princeton University and earned a master’s degree from New York University.
