In a dramatic shift in the 2024 presidential race, US President Joe Biden has announced that he will not seek re-election, citing it as being “in the best interest of my party and the country.” This announcement comes just four months before the American electorate heads to the polls, fundamentally altering the dynamics of the upcoming election.
The decision follows mounting pressure from within the Democratic Party, exacerbated by a lackluster debate performance against Republican challenger Donald Trump in late June. The intense scrutiny and feedback from fellow Democrats appear to have influenced Biden’s choice to withdraw from the race.’
In his announcement posted on social media on Sunday evening, Biden expressed his gratitude, stating that it had been the greatest honor of his life to serve as president. He used the opportunity to endorse Vice President Kamala Harris as his successor, signaling a shift in the Democratic presidential ticket.
This unexpected development reshapes the political landscape and sets the stage for a new phase in the presidential campaign as the nation prepares for the November elections.
