BLANTYRE-(MaraviPost)-Ntopwa Women FC’s hopes of progressing in the CAF Women’s Champions League COSAFA qualifiers have been dealt another blow after suffering a 3-0 defeat to Namibia’s Beauties FC in their second Group A match played on Sunday at AJ UW Muller Stadium in South Africa.
Namibian striker Millicent Natalie Hikuam proved unstoppable, netting a brace, while Twelikondjele Amukoto sealed the victory with a third goal late in the match.
The win earned Beauties a vital three points, boosting their chances of advancing to the semi-finals.
This result leaves Malawi’s Ntopwa anchored at the bottom of Group A with no points, having also lost their opening fixture 3-0 to South Africa’s defending champions Mamelodi Sundowns Ladies.
The team has now conceded six goals without reply in the tournament.
Zesco Ndora, who are among the regional powerhouses, are expected to pose another stern test for the Blantyre-based club.
Despite the defeats, Ntopwa’s participation marks a historic moment for Malawi’s women’s football as this is the team’s debut in the CAF Women’s Champions League qualifiers.
Football analysts Ibrahim Phiri said the experience will help expose the players to higher levels of competition and inspire the growth of the women’s game back home.
Group A features four strong teams, with only the top two qualifying for the knockout stages.
Mamelodi Sundowns remain favourites, while Beauties and Zesco will battle for the remaining spot.
