The Electricity Supply Corporation of Malawi (ESCOM) is currently facing technical difficulties with its prepaid electricity token vending system via mobile platforms.

The issue, which began at 11 am on April 26, 2025, has caused inconvenience to customers who are unable to purchase tokens using their mobile devices.

According to a press statement issued by ESCOM on Sunday, the utility company’s engineers are working tirelessly to restore normal operations as quickly as possible.

“We regret any inconvenience this problem may be causing,” the statement reads. Despite the efforts, ESCOM has not provided a timeline for full system restoration but has assured the public that it will keep them informed of any developments.

This disruption highlights the challenges ESCOM faces in managing its electricity distribution system, particularly with prepaid meter systems.

The prepaid meter system requires customers to purchase tokens in advance, which can be inconvenient when technical issues arise.
