LILONGWE-(MaraviPost)-This evening, leaders of various political parties gathered at the Bingu International Convention Centre (BICC) in Lilongwe.
The meeting marks the second presidential debate, taking place just five days before the nationwide election scheduled for 16 September.
Members of Parliament and local councillors are also expected to participate, observing the discussions and engaging in follow-up activities.
During the debate, party leaders are anticipated to answer questions on key national issues, including the economy, agriculture, healthcare, disaster management, education, and infrastructure development.
According to the organizers, the invited parties expected to take part include UTM, MCP, UDF, PP, and DPP.
The leader of the United Transformation Movement (UTM), Saulos Chilima, is likely to focus on economic reform, job creation, and strategies to attract foreign investment.
MCP, led by President Lazarus Chakwera, is expected to highlight achievements in governance, infrastructure, and social services while addressing concerns on public sector efficiency and national unity.
The United Democratic Front (UDF) leader, Atupele Muluzi, may emphasize youth empowerment, education, and decentralization of development projects to local communities.
Patriotic Party (PP) leader Michael Usi is anticipated to focus on social welfare, cultural preservation, and policies aimed at improving rural livelihoods.
The Democratic Progressive Party (DPP), represented by acting party officials in the absence of former President Peter Mutharika, is expected to raise issues around economic stability, trade, and national security.
Earlier, on 21 August this year, both Chakwera and Mutharika did not participate in a previous debate of this nature, citing scheduling conflicts.
Citizens and the public are encouraged to follow the live debate via MIJ Online, starting at 6:30 this evening, to engage with the discussions and form informed opinions.
Conclusion
The gathering of political leaders at BICC offers a vital platform for voters to directly assess candidates’ policies and visions for Malawi.
By providing an opportunity to debate national priorities, the event promotes transparency, encourages civic participation, and strengthens democratic engagement across the country.
The insights shared tonight are expected to influence voter decisions and contribute to a more informed electorate ahead of the September 16 presidential election.
