NKHATA-BAY (MaraviPost)—Likoma Island, probably one of the best tourist spots in Malawi, will this month end be the centre of attraction as the annual Likoma Summer Cultural Festival (li-SURF) will be launched.
According to the organiser’s spokesperson, Patrick Chikoti, li-SURF is a summer festival event –with a fusion of modern music, cultural dances and games, which will be held every year starting August 2014 (30th – 31st) at Likoma Island, Chiponde Beach.
“This is aimed at promoting tourism to Likoma Island while at the same time providing people with an opportunity to learn, earn and advance their lives.
“On the other hand, the Festival will be providing a continuous and better environment of fun to people from all over the world,” said Chikoti in a statement.
The organisers say the festival will support Malawi Government efforts of wooing more tourists to Malawi and Likoma as elaborated in different cycles on the potential of Likoma Island in tourism.
On logistics, Chikoti said, “revellers will travel by buses from Blantyre, Lilongwe and Mzuzu to Nkhatabay where they will then be treated to a ship cruise to Likoma Island on 29th August and back on 31st August. Others will also travel by air using Ulendo.”
He also disclosed the event has been powered by Airtel Malawi, Kaya Mawa Lodge, Khaiko Lodge, Ulisa Bay Lodge, Sunrise Inn, Nation Newspaper and Malawi Shipping Company and will see Mlaka Maliro, Piksy, Lucky Stars and Diktator (DJ) among other celebrated artists performing.
